Short Business Message 

Students will submit a business message of their choosing that falls under the 

umbrella of a “short message,” which might include an email, a memo, a reference 

letter, an evaluation, public statement, or other genre falling within the 250-500 word 

range. Students will be given the choice to select a short business message that pertains 

to their industry or workplace of choice. The message should be an original message and 

not derivative of a previously composed text. 

Assignment. This assignment will be submitted to Canvas as a single PDF file 

that contains the following, in order: 250-word cover page outlining the audience, 

purpose, and expectations of the message; the message itself (minimum of 250 and 

maximum of 500 words); and a 250-word reflective memo giving a five-point list of 

the decisions made during the composition of the message. Submissions will 

consist of all three components in a single PDF document in the order listed above. 

Assessment. Assignment will be graded based upon its attention to detail, 

application of rhetorical concepts, and depth of thought. 

As for the assignment, there are three parts:
