Domestic Religious Extremist Groups and the Use of Violence
1. Graduate Transformation
Topic: Domestic Religious Extremist Groups and the Use of Violence
(annotated bibliography) (7 sources) (APA format)
I have been asked about the annotated bibliography. Let me clear up a few things (but most of this can be found in the weekly module).
First, you need a “total” of 7 sources. At least 3 from journals/peer reviewed articles and at least 3 books.
The link in week 3 for the Cornell examples gives you many, but here is one:
Waite, L., Goldschneider, F., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51(4), 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
This is an “annotated citation”. I really want two things for this assignment. 1. I want you to cite the source in APA (that is the highlighted section). 2. Then at minimum you should write at least three sentences or a paragraph basically summarizing the conclusion/findings. That is the underlined section.
For this assignment you can look at the abstract, and then go to the end of the paper to see the findings/conclusions/results, and then just take about 3-5 sentences and summarize what they found. It doesn’t have to be extremely in depth.

Activity 3: Transitions Exercise
CONTEXT
One characteristic of good writing is that it flows well, and transitions can help with this. Read sections 4.1-4.2 under Continuity and Flow in the APA manual (pp.111-12) in preparation for this assignment.
DESCRIPTION
Find two pages of something you have written and make sure it is academic in nature. First, reread it. Are all of the sentences and topics connected or are some transitions awkward or otherwise hard to follow? If these connections are not smooth or lucid, think about how can you improve this.
Second, underline or circle all the transitions you have created between sentences, topics, and paragraphs. Do you see patterns? Do you rely on certain devices more than others? If you think the writing could be better, rewrite one page and submit it. If you do not think you can make it better, submit what you have, and explain how you determined that the writing cannot be improved (“what you have” should include circled or underlined transitions).
Alternatively, you may exchange papers with a classmate so that you can both provide feedback to each other. If you choose this option, submit the other student’s writing with your feedback–to both the student and the appropriate assignment folder.
3. (Discussion Board post) (3 paragraphs) (APA citations) (in-text citations are a must)
Activity 1: Discussion – Analyzing a Diagnostic Tool
CONTEXT
It matters how we assess things. Next week, you will write a critical analysis that will judge how an author (or authors) went about their work: what method they used to gather data, the validity of their supporting arguments, the repeatability of their testing, etc. Here, we will begin enhancing those critical thinking skills by analyzing a highly-criticized diagnostic tool from the field of psychology.
DESCRIPTION
Look at the Narcissistic Personality Inventory created in 1979 using this link: NPI. (You are NOT required to take the assessment — although it may help with this exercise — just to analyze it). Use the Regis library website to find articles that discuss this assessment. Explain what you think of this inventory and its reliability and validity. For example, does it measure what it claims to measure? What concerns (if any) do you have? Why do you think it is so widely used? Cite whatever sources inform your discussion. Use both in-text and end-of-text citation in your initial post.
4. Learning Activity Two
Activity 2: APA Scavenger Hunt
CONTEXT
A wise advisor once said, “Scholarship is mostly in the thumbs.” In saying this, he meant that a good scholar is always looking things up. One of the best ways to learn something as tedious as APA formatting is to simply do it: look up examples in the manual, mimic their format using a real-life example, and repeat.
DESCRIPTION
Use your APA manual to answer the following questions.
1. How do you cite the following in APA? Use the APA manual to determine how to cite an item from each of the following categories. Construct a schema of the type provided for you in the lesson titled “References List” above.
- Newspaper article
- Chapter in an edited book
- Facebook page
- Podcast episode
- Blog post
- YouTube video
2. Which voice or perspective is used in most academic papers (first person, second person, third person)? Why?
3. How are authors cited within the text (i.e., which names and titles are employed)?
4. A private email falls under the general category of “personal communication.” How should you cite an email within the text of your paper? Why is there no corresponding end-of-text citation in this case?
5. How are sources cited within the text? Are citations placed at the end of the sentence or paragraph, or integrated?
6. There is likely a vast number of works that have some bearing on the topic you have chosen to write about. How should one decide which sources to cite?
5. Activity 3: APA Citation Exercise
CONTEXT
Practice makes perfect. Here, we are going to practice APA citations.
DESCRIPTION
Given the schemas you’ve been provided in this week’s content and the schemas you constructed for the “scavenger hunt” assignment posted above, you now have schemas on hand for 8 different kinds of end-of-text citations in APA format. For this assignment, you need to go off-topic.
- Construct a reference list with 4 references for 4 different kinds of sources, choosing from among the 8 kinds that you already have schemas for. Here you are honing your APA citation skills, trying specifically to stretch the bounds of your knowledge of APA guidelines, so you will cite sources you have not previously discussed, and do not plan to use in the future.
- Once you have composed your reference page, create a blank page in front of it by inserting a page break in front of all four references.
- On the new page you’ve created, write one sentence about each source in your reference list, and employ in-text citation to back each claim you’ve made in each of the four sentences.
- Provide page numbers (or equivalent, depending on the medium) for any quotation or close paraphrase.
- When you are finished, you should have 4 end-of-text citations and 4 in-text citations for 4 different sources (i.e., one end-of-text citation and one in-text citation for each of the four sources) that are at least somewhat outside of your area of interest.
- Remember to properly label your reference page.
6. Activity 4: Quotations Exercise
CONTEXT
Knowing how and when to quote another writer is something with which many early-career writers struggle. Before this exercise, read section 8.25 “Principles of Direct Quotation” (pp. 270-71) in the APA manual, then skim pp.271-78.
DESCRIPTION
Using what you have learned in the reading prescribed, take an article of your choice (tip: you may want to take this opportunity to chose one for next week’s Critical Analysis) and write two paragraphs:
- Paragraph 1: Use a quotation incorrectly. What does it look like to misuse a quotation or to rely on it too much? For this, you must think through the Principles of Direct Quotation provided by the APA (pp. 270-71).
- Paragraph 2: Use a quotation correctly. What does it look like to follow the APA guidelines for Principles of Direct Quotation? Show your facilitator you understand the concepts discussed.
