One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Reaction 1. I recommend seeing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest if you have not already. This movie is about how mentally ill people were portrayed back in the day. One of the main characters, Randle P McMurphy, plays as a 38-year-old mentally ill person living in a psychiatric hospital. This guy shows up with his black leather jacket, a black bag containing socks and a t-shirt, a beanie, and a pack of cigarettes rolled in his sleeve. He is the guy that all the mental patients look up to because he is not afraid to speak what is on his mind. McMurphy wants these people that are in the hospital to be released and encourages them to do so. The nurse wants the opposite. McMurphy gives Nurse Batched, head nurse, trouble as soon as he gets into the hospital. Nurse Batched oversees group sessions at the psychiatric hospital and treats the patients with no respect which McMurphy points out to the others. When McMurphy shows up for the very first group session he sits down and does not care if he causes a disruption to the group by shuffling a deck of cards in his hands. He finds out later in the pool scene that his stay was unknown for how long he would be in there and wants to know why no one told him prior. Throughout the movie, he wants to make Nurse Batsbeg feel like she has less power than she thinks she has. Without giving the ending away completely, Nurse Batched was defeated by McMurphy. He had help from his newly formed friend, Chief, to defeat her. One quality that made this film remarkably good was the acting. The actors that were chosen played an important role in the movie and fit the character well. One scene that stuck out to me with the exceptional acting was when Cheswick wanted his cigarettes and all "hell" broke loose. Each main patient passed around a cigarette with a joking manner while Cheswick was yelling to get his cigarettes back. All he wanted was his cigarettes and Nurse Betched told him she would tell him why his cigarettes are gone when he calms down. In the background, the audience can hear glass break as an indication that this moment was an intense scene where Cheswick was not very happy. He tells Nurse Ratchet to "Piss on your fing rules" and is enraged because he cannot have his cigarettes. The actor that plays Cheswick does a good job portraying his anger and frustration. All the other actors also do a good job passing the cigarette around and then putting it into Billy’s pants where Billy’s actor starts acting out and gets taken away by the guards. I am sure it takes tons of patience to capture these scenes and find people who are good to fit the role, so I give everyone that was involved in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest credit for producing such a great film There was quite an amount of similarities between One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the article "On Being in Insane Places." One thing that both had in common was depersonalization. In the article, there was a patient who was beaten in front of everyone for approaching an attendant and telling him, "I like you." The person that was beaten felt weak and powerless; he was just exposed to all the patients and will relive that disturbing experience the rest of his life. A similar situation happened in the movie with the character Billy. Billy has a stutter and Nurse Ratchet being insensitive to his situation calls him out in front of the group session about his mother, girlfriend, and first suicide attempt. She does not care and everyone is there to hear her talk to him. Cheswick, another character, is not happy about the situation and defends Billy. Staff in both, the movie and the article did not treat patients with respect. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the staff knew where every patient came from whether that be they volunteered or they came from jail and as soon as they knew McMurphy came from jail they treated him differently. They thought right away that he was going to be trouble and that he should get evaluated by Dr, Spivey on why he is in the hospital. McMurphy wants to put the World Series on and is denied by Nurse Batched The staff "empowered" the patients, and if they acted up the staff thought the best solution was to give edictions: On Accessibility: Unavailable
Styles them electric shock therapy. In the article, it said, "It is difficult to know the extent to which they were treated like patients or like research colleagues." The staff barely interacts with the patients and when they do they treat them based off of whatever they are diagnosed not who the person is. I observed in both types of entertainment, that the sta relies on the labels of patients to determine how they are going to treat them. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest had me hooked at the beginning. Randle McMurphy made the movie with his humor and trying to send Nurse Batched off the edge. I played basketball, so it was neat to see the basketball scene with McMurphy where he taught Chief how to play. I think for me; the most disturbing scene was when the staff performed electric shock therapy even though McMurphy did not do any harm. I also found that surprising that they sent him to get the treatment done because of his behavior instead of talking it out first. It surprised me that McMurphy had those girls come into the hospital and practically threw a big party which the night watch person allowed because of the alcohol he was given as a bribe. There was such a significant impact with this movie because nobody really knew what mentally ill people were treated like or who mentally ill people even were when this movie came out. There are so many different types of mental illnesses and the definitions of them are always being redone because there are different symptoms that keep appearing within time. The staff treated these patients poorly and did not care for them the way they should have been cared for. There should have been positive interaction between the patients and the staff, but instead Nurse Batched was controlling the whole floor with her negativity. Each main patient played a significant role in this movie because each one had a different story. McMurphy wanted each of them to grow some confidence for themselves and throughout the movie he tells each one that they are unique and he believes in them.
