Although a huge demographic shift took place in the United States, many people remain voluntarily segregated in their own homogeneous neighborhoods, churches, and social circles.

This assignment aims to provide you with an opportunity to examine your own familiar boundaries, encourage you to cross those boundaries, and encourage you to engage with others in diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts.

Here, you will examine how similarity attraction theory fits within our study of diversity. Sociologists have observed how “birds of a feather flock together.” In ministering diverse populations, one has to overcome one’s natural social inclination and intentionally reach out to different groups.

Task 1: Diversity:

Spend thirty minutes charting out your social circle to assess how many similarities and differences you share in your social circle.

Spend thirty minutes assessing your congregants’ diversity wheel: observe social hours, observe table fellowship after church, and assess how similarity attraction theory fits and/or does not fit.

Task 2: Biblical Reflection:

Spend thirty minutes using the diverse parts and roles described in 1 Corinthians 12 to assess the social power dynamics of your congregants. Submit your reflection in 200 words.
