The first step in our Alternative Genre assignment is brainstorming and pre-writing a bit. For this assignment, please share your ideas for what you are planning on focusing on and what genre you are aiming for. Please answer the questions below. You can type them OR record a video.

Tell me about which theme you’re planning on analyzing, and why you chose that theme. Try to explain your point of view/lens on the theme and why you are interested in it. This can be for personal connection reasons or more academic ones, but most likely a blend.

Then, share about the aspect of genre selection for your essay. What are your ideas? What are some challenges you might encounter with producing your assignment in this chosen genre? If you are unsure which genre you want, share some pros and cons of the ones you are considering. You can even include your own strengths and weaknesses as far as experience with that genre. You can use this time to try planning out steps you will need to take to create your essay.

Now, share your plans for evidence:

Share around 2 possible passages/quotes you think you might work into your essay. Include the page numbers. As an option, you can share the quote/passage and write about the theme connection you are making.

If you’re thinking about outside sources, share what you have and what your plans are. Share some of the source information and what parts of the source are informative. You can even talk about how the source can help you generate more direction and ideas for your assignment.

Lastly, share 3 goals you have for your rough draft/rough cut/outline (which is our next step). What steps or goals can you brainstorm/plan out now that you should do next in order to make progress towards completing your assignment
