Part 1

Music, lyrics, and poetry are powerful ways to express cultural and personal feelings about our lives. For this assignment, you will choose 8-10 songs that have meaning for you and say something to you about contraception, pregnancy, birth, fertility, parenting, and/or abortion and assemble a playlist. They do not have to specifically be about these topics, just say something to you that is relevant to how you think about these topics! You can do this with a free Spotify account, or on iTunes or another service that you use. The songs can be in English or any other language, and all genres are acceptable.

For each song, you’ll write a brief (1-2 paragraph) reflection on what the song means to you and/or why you chose it. The last part of the assignment is a 1-2 page reflection on what you learned during this assignment, or what patterns you noticed as you put the playlist together, or another observation you had. This is not a formal writing assignment, but instead a chance to think about what meanings you found in this process.

Finally, please attach a link to the playlist so that I can listen to it! Some of my favorite songs have been found while grading this assignment or a similar one in previous terms.

Part 2

Interactive Read Aloud Sketch

The purpose of this assignment is to gain understanding and experience with the planning, practice, and reflecting on reading aloud as a way to develop emergent literacy skills and to foster reading motivation and engagement. You will select one or two children’s books in class. Template for the sketch, and for reflection, is attached, and a paper version will also be handed out in class. You will need to fill in the template for your before-during-after instructional sequence for a kindergarten and second grade student. This may be ONE book or TWO books (if your kindergarten book is very simple, a somewhat more complex book for second grade is recommended). You will conduct your read-aloud(s) with a kindergarten and a second grade student during our field day at Rising Star during session 2 (April 1, 2024). I have provided a set of slides where I walk through the process of completing this assignment: I will attach the reading aloud template you should fill out.
