For this assignment, you must use a free image generator of your choice to produce a work of art in the same style as one from class. Then, you must do a comparative visual analysis against the AI-generated work and the original object from the textbook and consider how accurate the produced image is. Then, in the second part of your essay, you must weigh in on the ethics of AI image generators and their ability to produce images that could replicate historical objects and cite two outside sources to back up your reasoning. Paper Assignment Details:

Length: 1250-1500 words (5 pages double-spaced)

Format: 12 pt font, double-spaced, single-spaced header!

For this assignment, you are actually required to use AI, but for a specific purpose! There has been much debate about the ethics of using AI to generate false information and “deep fakes.” This paper asks you to think about these issues in relation to Art History. This is an analytical paper that asks you to experiment with a free image generator, compare the image to a real object and build an argument about the ethics of these tools.

Select your image generator (a list of ones will be provided below) and start experimenting with different prompts and objects you want to replicate from the course content.

Some sample prompts might be:

An impressionist painting of a French landscape

A 19th century historical photograph

A neoclassical painting of a battle

A hyper-realistic image of a Ming vase

A cubist painting like Pablo Picasso

Choose one image from the ones you generate and compare it against an example from your textbook.

Consider the following questions in your comparison:

How well did AI do in creating an image that resembles the original?

Specifically, what did it get right and/or wrong? Consider: color, composition, subject matter, texture, lines, lighting and contrast, etc.

Could you tell that this is an AI generated image? Why or why not?

Consider how well the AI image generator produced the image from the prompt you gave it and consider the following question: What do you think are the ethics of using AI to generate an image? Should one use AI to produce historically inspired images? Why or why not? What might this mean for today’s artists and the study of history?

In your analysis you should include TWO outside sources on either AI or art and AI specifically. These can be online sources but try to find reputable sites (not someone’s personal blog, for example).

Experiment with your prompt. Sometimes you need to be super specific with the prompt to get the desired effect. Try changing wording around, referencing specific artists or time periods, and being specific about the style (a realistic painting of melting clocks… for example!)
