Social Responsibility Within the Organizational Structure

1) There are many benefits of CSR programs. Some of these major benefits of CSR is consumers are more likely to favor a company that has acted to benefit its customers. Another is the more a company engages in CSR, it is more likely to receive favorable brand recognition. Take Dollar General for instance. I used to work for the DolGen corporation and one of their CSR programs is the literacy foundation, which awards funding to organizations that provide direct services to adults that need literacy assistance in Adult Basic Education, GED or high school equivalency preparation, or English Language Acquisition. One other benefit of CSR is employees are more likely to stay with a company they believe in. Reducing employee turnover, disgruntled workers, and the cost it takes of hiring a new employee. Another great example of a well known company engaging in CSR is Tropical Smoothie. For a short time, I worked for them as well and I love the CSR program they implemented. Tropical Smoothie makes charitable donations to Camp Sunshine, which is a nonprofit organization based in Maine that welcomes families with children facing life-threatening illnesses to its year-round campus for some respite, relaxation, and recreation.
2)After this week’s reading, I could honestly say that while Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is optional, it is something that is necessary if one wishes to run a successful company. CSR involves things such as volunteering and donating—giving back to the community so to speak. The major benefit to CSR is that it gives employees a sense of purpose beyond the workplace; it breaks the mold of them considering themselves to be just another “number” and they can actually see and participate in real change within their community. Another benefit would have to be that employees are more inclined to show interest in the company (attract) and stay with a company (retain) that has proven to be socially responsible. According to this article, “research has shown that 82% of Gen Z workers consider CSR a significant factor when deciding on their next employer, and 66% would consider a pay cut if it meant working for a more socially responsible company.” Last but not least, employees aside, customers who see that a company is socially sound are more than likely to do business with said company. Organizations that give back to the community and cater to the environment generate positive attention, which in turn awards them with both loyal employees and customers.
