For this assignment you will:
Write a professional e-mail to a professor asking for a letter of recommendation for a job you’re applying for.
Page 1 of what you will turn in. Find an internship or position you would consider applying for. You will turn in this job description as part of your assignment. The job description can be copied and pasted on Page 1 of the PDF. Note: This needs to be an appropriate job for someone with your skill level. If you have questions regarding the job description and if it is appropriate, please send your professor an e-mail.
Page 2 of what you will turn in. Write a two-paragraph situation/context/audience paragraph – on why you chose the professor you did to request a letter from – why are they the best fit to write the letter? Be specific about what they know about you and what they can say about you that will look good to a recruiter. Don’t just say they are an expert in the field. It is great that they are an expert, but what they can say about you is more important. Edit this carefully – be clear, concise, complete. DO NOT USE AI FOR THIS SECTION. You may ONLY use spell check, grammar check and Grammarly for this part of the assignment.
Pages 3-5 of what you will turn in. You will write the professional e-mail to a professor who can speak to your specific abilities for the position you are applying for. You need to be specific about your experience in their class and why you think they are good fit to write the letter of recommendation. This should not be just a general request.
You will turn in 3 versions of this email. Your first draft with NO AI help other than standard Microsoft spelling/grammar check (Page 3 of the assignment). This should not have any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes.
A ChatGPT prompt asking AI to edit the e-mail you wrote to make it better. Be specific in your prompt – remember the better the prompt the better the results. Screen shot the prompt and the ChatGPT response and paste in the word document. (Page 4 of the assignment)
Take the ChatGPT version and edit it – merge some of the best recommendations along with your own writing to make it the best possible final version of the e-mail. Keep it authentic to your voice, but also professional. (Page 5 of the assignment). This should not have any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes.
Page 6 of what you will turn in. Write a two-paragraph summary on if and how beneficial AI was for this task. Use these questions to guide your write-up. (1) Did using AI help? (2) If so, how (at least 2 reasons)? If not, why not (at least 2 reasons)? (3) What are your thoughts on using AI in business writing like this? This should not have any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes.
