Brad and Angelina have been dating for two years and decide to move in together. Brad’s friends also cohabit with their romantic partners, and are happy for Brad and Angelina. Brad’s parents, however, are very displeased. His parents think cohabiting before marriage is inappropriate and are embarrassed to tell their friends this news. Use what you know about meaning and interaction to explain why Brad and his parents disagree about cohabitation. [Be sure to specifically describe the role of meaning and interaction (according to SI), as well as describe how these terms apply to this situation].

Justin and Jessica are newly married. As with most married couples Justin and Jessica are negotiating their roles within the relationship. Lately, Justin and Jessica have been arguing about the housework around the house. Jessica believes she is doing more than her fair share of housework, particularly since Justin is not working now, and she has been withholding sex as a result. Justin feels frustrated by Jessica withholding sex, so he has admittedly been lax in helping around the house. However, Justin understands that Jessica’s withholding of sex is likely related to him not helping around the house. Therefore, Justin agrees to help more around the house in the hopes that Jessica will stop withholding sex. Explain how perceived profit, the norm of reciprocity, the principle of reward, and the norm of distributive justice apply to Justin and Jessica’s situation.
