Explanation:
The play “First Responders” highlights the double standard that exists for female first responders. In the first scene, Monica is met with resistance from her husband when she arrives at a domestic violence call. While she is able to talk him down and diffuse the situation, her male superior questions her ability to handle the situation. He implies that she was too emotional and that she let the husband get the best of her. In the second scene, Monica is called to another domestic violence call. This time, the husband is armed, and she is forced to shoot him. While her superior tells her that she did what she had to do, the double standard is clear. Monica is held to a higher standard than her male counterparts and is expected to remain emotionless in the face of danger. This double standard is unfair and puts female first responders at a disadvantage.
