The article “Social Media for Rapid Knowledge Dissemination: Early Experience from the COVID-19 Pandemic.” goes
through the recent experience of the global disease covid19 and the spread of it around the world and how many confirmed cases of health workers. It also mentioned that lack of awareness was the reason that put health workers at the most risk. Author Chan said, “delivering rapid, reliable information that addresses critical infection control issues is of key importance.” Besides the regular methods used to transfer information such as emails, it’s very important to use faster social media routes such as Twitter and WeChat. The author provides an example of how effective social media can be used by disseminating infographics that describes practical intubation guidelines to be used in operating theatres and in critical care units. The author concludes that social media is so powerful in sending accurate fast information whenever it’s needed and only if used correctly.
In the article “Digital Dementia-Is Smart Technology Making Us Dumb?” the authors go through the complications of overusing technology and spending a lot of time on the internet which includes social media. They inform us of how social media can cause cognitive impairment, and how the right side of the brain which is linked to concentration and memory degenerates because we don’t use it. Moreover, addiction to social media has become a problem that endangers teens and adolescents. The authors note the importance of school and family in educating students to limit their use of technology, they also remind us of the importance to rely on our brains for remembering things.
social media is an important tool in our daily lives and its benefits overweighs its negatives, therefore I agree with the first article. Social media plays a critical role in our life. One recent example was given in the article about the pandemic of covid19 and it showed the urgency for rapid, accurate information for some critical situations, this is not only apparent in health settings but the whole world revolves around social media now, it’s important for sharing information and making connections.
For the second article, my reaction is that everything in life has its own positivity and negativity although it’s scary to know that by depending on social media we degenerate the right side of the brain, again social media is an important tool in our daily lives and its benefits overweigh its negative. We can control it instead of letting it control us.
