For this assignment, create a video of your field experience classroom using a video recording device, such as a camera or cellphone.
It is mandatory that the “Video Recording Permission Requests” be completed by the parent/guardian of each student prior to recording. If unable to obtain permissions from all students, you may still complete this assignment by recording just yourself during Part 3 of this assignment.
Part 1: Observation and Discussion
Observe your mentor for at least two hours or two class periods. You may also spend time observing other teachers the mentor has suggested as role models for working with ELL students and building a positive and inclusive classroom culture. Focus your observations on aspects of classroom climate, such as social interactions, behavioral and academic expectations, and the physical classroom environment. Following your observations, discuss the lessons you observed with your mentor and ask follow-up questions about how they support a safe and positive learning environment. Include the following questions:
How do you promote positive social interactions in your classroom and develop a culture of acceptance for linguistic and cultural differences?
How do you promote an inclusive classroom culture that prevents racism, stereotypes, and discrimination within your classroom?
How do you monitor your personal bias and continue to work on understanding the cultures of your students?
How do you maintain high expectations for all learners in the classroom?
What factors should be considered in creating a classroom environment that is linguistically and culturally supportive?
Part 2: Activity Planning
Collaborate with your mentor to plan a 5-7 minute whole-class activity that focuses on building an inclusive classroom climate through positive social interactions.
In the design of the activity, include the following:
The purpose of the activity, which can be academic, social-emotional, or classroom teambuilding
The use of strategies that build an inclusive classroom climate
Accommodations to engage ELLs and all students in the activity
Any considerations for how to set up the physical classroom environment
Materials that support the activity (e.g., literature, handout or worksheet, manipulatives)
Part 3: GoReact Video
With permission from your mentor, implement the whole-class activity. Following your activity implementation, review the experience with your mentor and receive feedback. Discuss what went well and what could have been done differently.
Record 3-5 minutes of your activity, then upload the video into GoReact.
There are two ways to access this assignment. When accessing it through the calendar view, select the “Open Assignment” button to begin work. When accessing it through the Topic content, select the “Go to Assessment” button to begin work.
Remember, video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.
Part 4: Reflection
Once you post your video, you will see it on the GoReact dashboard. Enter the playback screen by clicking the thumbnail. Watch the video and make at least two specific comments by bookmarking and making a comment where you see the following:
