Social Problem exploration
There is no absolute definition of what constitutes a social problem. Social problems are defined by a multitude of objective and subjective factors that vary across societies, among individuals and groups within a society, and across historical time periods (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2000). For the purpose of this assignment, we will view a social problem as a condition that–at least some people–view as being undesirable. Examples include crime, violence, drug abuse, and environmental problems. Such social problems can be found at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Instructions
The goal of this assignment is for you to explore a social problem of your own choosing. You should select a social problem relevant to the field of social work. Please upload your assignment once completed.
Once you have selected the problem, please respond to the following:
- Succinctly define the social problem
- Define the population(s) that is most impacted by this social problem be specific
- How would you frame this as a social justice issue? Another way to think about this query is: why should people care about this problem? (Note: You may want to look up the definition for social justice using a social work reference text [i.e., Social Work Encyclopedia, Social Work Dictionary, etc.])
- Identify at least one social program that is designed to address this social problem. Briefly describe this program.
- If you were King/Queen of the World, what social program would you design to combat this social problem?
