This video begins our discussion on the rise of African/Black enslavement in the American colonies. In the
beginning, those brought over and forced to labor were both African and white Englishmen and women. They were
initially indentured servants and all were treated similarly in the 1620s’; however, by the early 18th century, the
growth of cash crops caused the expansion of the slave trade and caused many colonies to adopt strict “black
codes,” thus transforming the social system into one of legal racial oppression.

precedent for African women’s “roles” in future colonies?
2. What occurred in 1640 that marked the turning point for black indentured servants?
3. Discuss and give examples of the progression of slave laws in the North American colonies.
