Great break down Kylie. I also wrote about some of the same conditions but didn’t know that people with anxiety can fall into 2 separate groups. I also didn’t know that schizophrenia was so complex with either group of both SSD + or SSD – people. The brain is really so complex!

Piaget Stages
Piaget’s first cognitive stage is the sensorimotor stage, which takes place from birth to two years old. During the sensorimotor stage, infants use their five senses along with whatever movements they are able to make to learn about the world and the environment around them. To move on to the next stage, infants must attain certain accomplishments such as object permanence, meaning they can do something like revealing a covered object. To advance to the next stage, an infant must also begin to learn language. Piaget’s second cognitive stage is the preoperational stage, which takes place from two to six/seven years old. During the preoperational stage, children begin to use their minds to get a clearer image of how things work, such as how people may think differently than them, or how the same mass of water is still the same, even in a larger or smaller container. To advance to the next stage, children must accomplish theory of mind (understanding that people think differently), they need to be competent with their imaginations (represented by pretend play), and they need to think in words rather than images. Piaget’s third cognitive stage is the concrete operational stage, which is from age seven to around age 12. In this stage, children need to be able to accomplish CTS (conservation task success) in their minds only, instead of having to complete them physically. One accomplishes this stage and can move on to the next when CTS tasks can be done in the mind, such as being able to solve a math problem in their head instead of having to write it down or use their fingers. Piaget’s fourth cognitive stage is the formal operational stage, which takes place from ages 12+. During the formal operational stage, the child works on thinking logically about concepts and uses metacognition, which is the act of thinking about their own thinking. Nobody leaves this stage, but as time goes on it gets more cognitively sophisticated for the individual as the number of complex tasks in front of them exponentially increases. Piaget has received criticism from I-P theorists and Social Psychologists. IP Theorists (Information-Processing) believe that Piagetian research underestimates the abilities that infants have, based on their testing where infants would look at a set of tunnels. The I-P Theorists came up with the idea and some evidence that infants have object permanence, meaning that much of Piaget’s early-stage research could be false. The Social Psychologists also found Piaget’s research to be underestimating the abilities of children, because they believe that Piaget’s research does not show a correlation between the environment that the children are placed in while they are being tested, and the results of the tests. This is because, in their research, they found that the children would perform better on the same task in a setting where the people around them and the toys were familiar compared to an unfamiliar setting.

The four cognitive stages by Piaget, that take place from infancy to adulthood include: Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational and Formal Operational. The Sensorimotor stage take place from birth to 2 years old. During this stage, individuals are working on their 5 senses as it leads to starting to learn language and object permanence in order to advance to the next cognitive stage. The Preoperational stage takes place from age 2 to 6/7 years old. Individuals are working on egocentric thinking, lack of theory mind and intuitive logic during this stage. Once accomplishments such as increased imagination, representational thinking and just understanding that other people do not think the same way as they do are reached, they are ready to advance to the next cognitive stage. The Concrete Operational Stage takes place from age 7 to 11. During this stage individuals are working on being physically involved for CTS. Once they can accomplish CTS and mental math, individuals are ready to advance to the next stage. Last is the Formal Operational stage which takes place from age 12 and older. During this stage individuals are working on thinking logically and metacognition, meaning thinking about what you are actually thinking. Once abstract logic (being able to think in adult-like ways) is accomplished, individuals have now reached what they are supposed to achieve in the final stage. Piaget was also criticized by both Social psychologists & Information-Processing (IP) theorists. IP theorists criticized Piagetian testing procedures for requiring cognitive skills that may not yet exist, leading to an underestimation of cognitive abilities that infants actually possess. Social Psychologists critiqued how unacquainted surroundings, different people, and accustomed toys were used in Piagetian lab testing. This shows that when evaluating cognitive capacity, social factors are important. The cognitive capacity of children were underestimated by Piagetian testing procedures, according to social psychologists.
