Select one health care policy/law that has affected the practice of OT and research the policy. Hint… Start with Box 4.1 in Chapter 4 of the Intro to OT book. Answer the following questions:

1. Who is responsible for creating policies that affect OT practice? Give me the names of legislative bodies and policymakers.

2. Discuss the history and the intent of the policy. Be sure to include the name and year the policy/law was enacted.

3. Did the policy/law positively or negatively impact OT practice? Justify your answer.

3. What does the term advocacy mean?

Explain how OT practitioners advocate in ALL of the following situations:

Policies
System changes
Emerging practice areas
Opportunities to expand the OTA’s role.

4 Create a list of factors that affect the delivery of occupational therapy services.

Here are the categories:

1. Socioeconomic

2. Political

3. Geographic

4. Demographic

Be sure to include at least 2-3 factors for each category. You can copy/paste my list, and you DO NOT need to write full sentences. 

5 Primary care is an emerging area of OT practice. The topic can be confusing, because it is not a traditional OT setting, like a hospital or a clinic. Explain what OT in primary care may look like….. include settings, populations, and the role of OT. The AOTA website is a good resource. 

6 Part 1

In your own words, create a statement that explains the “distinct nature” of occupation. This statement should be short: 1-2 sentences.

Part 2

Find a research article as evidence that occupation supports health and well-being. I understand this may be your first time to article search. We will practice more as the semester continues. Type the name of the article, the author(s), and the year it was published.
