Over the last decade, the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn has increased. According to recent reports, seven out of ten Americans use these sites, which is up from 26% in 2008. Those who support the use of social networking sites say that social media encourages interaction with family and friends; offers educators and students a learning platform outside the classroom; and provides faster access to news events. However, opponents argue that social media inhibits face-to-face interaction and isolates users; decreases productivity and success in school due to distractions; and spreads unreliable and even harmful information.
