1. For decades the primary functions of planning, organizing, staffing, and controlling the correctional environment have been the standards needed to accomplish organizational goals. Simply put, to be effective, correctional leaders are responsible for the general management of primary functions within their organization. Discuss one primary function and the vital role it plays to set, define and meet the organization’s goals? Explain why it is essential for correctional leaders to take charge when carrying out this function?
2. One of Correctional Leaders’ fundamental responsibilities is to ensure staff and the prison population’s safety and security. Correctional Leaders have a duty to be responsive to environmental demands and external factors that affect daily operations. Discuss what actions correctional administrators should take to set the tone or show leadership in a correctional environment? What values must a correctional administrator have to address leadership issues?

Explain a correction organization’s use of the chain of command and span of control? Give an example of each term? Discuss whether you agree or disagree with using these terms?
5. COVID is a pandemic that has impacted the operations and budget of correctional agencies throughout the country. Increased medical, staffing, and housing issues have been static in managing their institutions. Management struggles in finding solutions to solve these issues. If you were the Correctional Administrator of an institution impacted by a pandemic, what actions would you take to ensure human safety and maintain efficient operations? What role would risk management have, if any, regarding facility stabilization?
6. An external environment can be controlled or uncontrolled. As a correctional leader, the optimal goal is to manage factors that can compromise the agency’s daily functions, which can be a noble yet challenging task. Identify three external organizations that can present threats to a correctional institution? State one way in which you would combat the threat for each.
7. Contraband is nonpermissible items that are forbidden from entering correctional facilities. All prisons have a specific list of designated contraband items, and it varies by state. Correctional Administrators must recognize that there are various approaches to prevent and control contraband in prisons. Discuss what tactics you would use to minimize and control contraband from being introduced into a correctional institution? Do you think prisoners found in possession of contraband should lose all privileges for the duration of their incarceration? Be specific. What about staff members found to be in possession of contraband? What actions, if any, should be taken against these individuals?
8. According to the text, Mental health treatment programs are essential in prisons as many prisoners suffer from mental health problems. In many states, there are mixed responsibilities between correctional and mental health agencies. Review the categories of mental health treatment discussed in the course material. Should we provide inmates with free mental health treatment while in prison? If so, what are the benefits of providing prisoners with mental health treatment? What steps would you take before releasing prisoners who suffer from mental health problems back into society?
9. Throughout history, prison lawsuits continuously challenge inmate medical care, and the federal courts do not consider the lack of state funding as an acceptable defense. In today’s correctional environment, the most crucial issue in evaluating effectiveness is initiating cost-effective approaches. Discuss two issues Correctional Administrators face in providing quality medical care to prisoners, and suggest solutions to each issue. How would you provide adequate medical care to prisoners without increasing the correctional agency’s budget? Be specific and support your answer.
10. Reentry is a new focus of contemporary corrections. Elected officials are continuously looking for new ways to help prisoners with their reentry back into communities. The Second Chance Act, which authorized over $300 million for prisoner programs, was designed to help protect public safety and reduce recidivism rates. Explain the risk factors associated with prisoners returning to their communities. What program would you implement to help prisoners towards being successful with reentering their society? Would the program be the same for men and women? Be specific; you may discuss an internal or external program.
