Requirements
Paper length: 5-7 pages (not including the bibliography section) double spaced lines, no larger than 12 point font, ONLY WORD documents (“.doc” or “.docx”) will be accepted. Remember this is a research paper.
References: You must cite where you got your information. Please use at least three current (year 2000 to the present) scholarly* references (this course textbook does not count as one of the three) and cite them in your paper as well as on a reference/bibliography section that can demonstrate you have done independent research. Warning: Wikipedia and/or any informational website (specially .com, or “.org”) are NOT accepted as scholarly references.
When citing please follow the APA or MLA formatting style. The guidelines for these formats can be found at: http://libguides.missioncollege.org/research101/cite (Links to an external site.) and/or http://www.wisc.edu/writing/Handbook/Documentation.html (Links to an external site.).
Recommendation: Minimize your own personal opinions. You need to show evidence of independent research. If you decide to include your opinions, they need to be supported by several publications. Books, and/or articles that you find and quote. The more references you use to prepare your research paper the higher the grade. If you have not taken English 1A, seek immediate assistance at the Tutoring Center.
* “Scholarly” means any publication in a reputable Journal, book, etc that is open to peer review and it is backed scientifically by a professional association (i.e., APA), written by a researcher, etc, etc. Stay away from .com” or “.org” websites and Wikipedia. Magazines or newspapers such as TIME, Newsweek, etc can be used as “informational” in the body of your essay, but do not count (or at least I do not count them) as “scholarly references.” They are usually reporting from an original source that you should research and look into.
Remember: to qualify as a scholastic reference ask yourself the following questions (1) where was it published? (2) was it a peer reviewed journal/publication? (3) when was it published and by whom? (does it include the date/year of publication and author) (4) does it provide a bibliography of the research/findings published?
Also, do not use as references in your bibliography section textbooks from this class or any other class. Use the data bases or any other library. The latter is the way you provide evidence of independent research.
