Everyone addresses number 9 and the final response.
1. Address Sterling Hayden’s choice of trash and garbage placed strategically around the outdoor area he occupied. In what way did his thought of taking this step might somehow keep him safe?
2. Arcane rules kept Sterling from getting the help he was finally ready to receive. This is normative in mental health care. The codes and qualifications are often an impenetrable thicket. How do we deal with this?
3. On page 6, about 3/4’s of the way down, notice the term “survival services” at the church. What does this term mean to you, given the context of the chapter?
4. Toward the top of page 7 he refers to the paucity of teaching about mental illness in the seminaries. This is also normative. How is it possible that this radically lost and alone population is considered irrelevant to the training of future clergy? Why is this?
5. Page 8: “Please tell me that someone cares.” This outcry is the bareness of the human soul in bold relief. In what way does this cry for help expand the homeless mind set to you?
6. Terri was plenty reticent about getting mental health treatment. Without Rennebohm’s companionship, she would have run from that blizzard of paperwork. In what ways might such a companionship be built into the fabric of our mental health services?
7. Once the paperwork was done, the staff was a model of caring (page15). Patient listening was the key. From this came tactful questions, and a spirit of compassion dominated. To what degree is this the spirit that fills the clinic and hospital as people with such troubled minds enter? How can compassion be learned and practiced regularly in our mental health agencies and homeless service providers?
8. Lower half of page 17: the brokenness we share as mortals and the seeds of healing that are within us – this is a realistic assessment followed by an asset-based understanding of healing. This must work hand in hand with the traditional, take-the-meds model. Meds have their place, but crucial is in the will, the decision, the desire to heal. Once this will is brought to life, the assets are there. Expand this idea in the context of asset based community service.
9. Everyone. Chapter 9 addresses social action and companions. What are the implications of social action and companions? (b) “Why are these two components important?”
To conclude, research the topic homelessness and mental illness on the web.
Select one reading/report. How does this finding expand your understanding of homelessness and mental illness?
Finish the paper by stating at least two ways this assignment increases your understanding of homelessness and mental illness.
