Directions
In this journal assignment, you will start by reiterating your topic and research question and identifying your audience. Then, you will share two sources from your independent research and examine them for bias.
Specifically, you must address the following:
- List credible and relevant sources you found in the Shapiro Library during your independent research.
- Include two sources that you find from your independent research.
- Include the link to both sources. Alternatively, you can practice using attribution conventions to cite sources by writing a citation for each source using APA or MLA conventions. While you will not be graded on the accuracy of this citation, this is a great opportunity to practice citing sources using the citation format you chose to use in this course. Remember, you will need to use the format you chose in Module One for the duration of the course, including all assignments and the project.
- Evaluate your sources.
- Describe how each source supports your topic and how it can help answer your research question.
- Discuss why you trust the credibility of your sources and/or what questions or doubts you have about the information presented in your sources.
- Discuss how you think your audience will view the credibility of your sources for your argument.
- Explain the bias found in each source.
- Explain how the bias or lack of bias in each source impacts your argument.
- Explain how you think your audience will respond to the bias or lack of bias in each source.
What to Submit
Submit your journal as a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Sources should be cited according to either APA style or MLA style.
PLEASE USE TOPICS FROM THE BELOW ATTACHMENT!!

ENG 190 Project Resources Document
How to Use this Document The following instructions are meant to help guide you in understanding how to use this document and select a topic for your project in this course. Even though some of these steps mention assignment submissions, please refer to the guidelines and rubrics for your assignments for the specific instructions for each assignment you will complete in this course.
1. Review the category options and choose the category that most interests you. Include your chosen category in your assignment submission.
2. Review the related articles for that category. 3. Choose one article from your category and cut and paste the corresponding APA or MLA citation for your chosen article into your
assignment submission. The citations for each article can be found under the category tables. You will need to use the format you choose in Module One for the duration of the course, including all assignments and the project.
4. As you review the article, brainstorm possible topic ideas and research questions that are debatable and could be used for a persuasive essay.
5. Identify a debatable topic within your chosen article. This debatable topic will be your focus for your persuasive essay. Include your debatable topic in your assignment submission.
6. Then, brainstorm possible research questions that align with your topic.
Example In this example, a student has chosen Higher Education for their category. Follow the student through their steps: Step 1 – The student chose Higher Education for their category. Step 2 – The student reviewed the related articles for the Higher Education category. Step 3 – The student chose one article from the category. In this example, the student scrolled down this document and selected the corresponding APA or MLA citation for their chosen article and included the citation in their assignment submission. In this example, the student chose the MLA citation: Heredia Rodriguez, Carmen. “Adjunct Professors: Jobs Are Low on Pay and Health Benefits With High COVID Risk.” Kaiser Health News, 23 July
2020, khn.org/news/adjunct-professors-jobs-are-low-on-pay-and-health-benefits-with-high-covid-risk/. Accessed 5 Jan. 2023.
2
Step 4 – The student then reviewed the article they chose and brainstormed possible topic ideas and research questions that were debatable and could be used for a persuasive essay. Step 5 – The student then identified a debatable topic from their chosen article. This became their focus for their essay. They included this in their assignment submission. In this example, the student chose the debatable topic of adjunct professors should have better pay and health benefits. Step 6 – The student brainstormed possible research questions for the assignment submission. See the Topic Selection Funnel for a visual representation of how to narrow your topic.
