Lab 5: Chemical Bonding and VSEPR Simulation (18 pts) Name ______________________ Introduction: The “Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion” model, or VSEPR, allows us to use electron-dot structures to predict the 3-dimensional geometry of simple molecules. This geometry is determined by considering the number of electron charge clouds or electron groups around the central atom in a molecule; they can be either nonbonding pairs of electrons or single, double, or triple bonding pairs of electrons. According to this model, electron charge clouds around the central atom try to stay as far apart from each other as possible due to electrostatic repulsions.
