Project 1: Diode modeling, DC simulation and Rectifier circuits (Tasks 1-5: 11%, task 6: 25%, report writing quality:20%, diversity bonus: 10%)
You are encouraged to read Chapter 4 in the textbook before attempting this project.
1) Choose a diode model available in LTSPICE and DigiKey that you think will potentially satisfy all project requirements. Explain why this diode model will meet the design requirements (Hint:Peak inverse voltage, peak rated current). State the diode manufacturer, forward voltage specification, packaging option and price per unit from the Digikey (https://www.digikey.com/) website. If you are ambitious, you may try to import additional diode model besides sticking to the default diode library. However, the new diode model has to be available for purchase in Digikey. Include a snapshot of the datasheet front page (which shows diode key specifications such as forward voltage drop, etc.).
2) Run DC sweep analysis (Hint: You may use the circuit shown, using an arbitrarily small R<0.1Ω and sweep the DC voltage source values using SPICE parametric sweep function) to

obtain the diode current-diode voltage curve (with respect to a range of -12V to 12V). Compare the diode forward voltage simulated and the datasheet data obtained earlier.
3) Perform analytical hand analysis to estimate the peak current and peak output voltage based on the diode forward voltage value extracted in task 2 according to circuit shown below. The voltage source is a 12V amplitude-60Hz AC sinusoidal voltage source whereas R is set to 10 kΩ. Run SPICE transient simulation and compare the analytical solution with the simulation results obtained. Include your SPICE simulation schematic and waveforms which show the output voltage, diode current and load current.
4) Perform analytical hand analysis to estimate the peak current and peak output voltage based on the diode forward voltage value extracted in step 2 according to circuit shown below. The voltage source is a 12V amplitude-60Hz AC sinusoidal voltage source whereas R is set to 10 kΩ. Run SPICE transient simulation and compare the analytical solution with the simulation results obtained. Include your SPICE simulation schematic and waveforms which show the output voltage, individual diode current and load current.
5) Implement two rectifier circuits based on topology from task 3 and task 4 to convert 12V amplitude-60Hz AC sinusoidal voltage source into DC voltage, respectively with the associated filter to achieve output ripple voltage of at most 200mV with a 10 kΩ resistor load. Show your hand calculation steps and SPICE simulations that show output voltage (label peak and valley voltage), output ripple voltage, resistor load current and diode current.
Page 2/5
Discuss the difference (if any) between your hand analysis prediction and SPICE simulation.
Note the change in peak diode current in task 5 vs task 3 and 4. Peak diode current simulated must be smaller than 50% of the rated maximum diode current as shown in datasheet. Include datasheet screenshot as proof.
6) Choose one of the rectifiers built in task 5, present your total bill of material and performance summary of final design completed in task 5, in Table I format as shown below. Explain your design strategy, component choice rationale and attach related Digikey pricing snapshots to support your cost claim. When calculating your total cost, you may assume that you have $5000 budget in task 5. Finally, estimate the printed circuit board (PCB) space required by all the components needed to construct the proposed circuit. You should get the component PCB footprint information from the datasheet.
(Please note that task 6 would need substantial time to complete, please plan ahead.)
Extra credit: The three groups with the best economic value figure-of-merit (FOM1), or with the best reliability-value figure-of-merit (FOM2) while meeting the ripple voltage requirement will be awarded extra credit up to 15 points, 10 points, and 5 points, respectively.
FOM1 is defined as: Total units of rectifiers, given a $5000 budget. Rectifiers must meet performance specification, i.e. ripple voltage must be kept at 200 mV or lower.
FOM2 is defined as:
Circuit reliability, assessed via ratio of Peak diode surge current / Maximum Rated Diode Surge current and Peak inverse voltage / Maximum peak reverse voltage from Datasheet**
FOM 1 is deemed better if the numerical value is higher.
FOM 2 is deemed better if the numerical value is lower.
