Research & Summaries Question
B2011 Research Topic (RT) Overview & Instructions (worth 20% of final grade) Winter 2024 Your Research Topic (RT) is due to be uploaded to a DropBox in Brightspace by 10pm on Thursday, February 8th. The purpose of this assignment is to guide you to produce a focused and coherent Research Topic (RT) to later produce a fully supported and wellwritten proposal. That is, a Research Proposal (RP) on the same Topic. An approval must be obtained prior to commencing your second assignment, Research Proposal (RP). As a preliminary step to refining your Research Topic and pinpointing your title, you will conduct extensive *secondary research* on your Topic of interest. Choosing your Topic Identify an issue (academic or business-related) which you would like to learn more about and seek others’ opinions upon. The Topic must be something you can potentially study through research. That is, collecting data from a sample population using appropriate instruments, such as, questionnaires or interviews. The collected data would then typically be analyzed to summarize the results and/or use this information for another purpose, for example, to improve a product, inform opinions on a policy, and so on. You stop at the Research Proposal stage in this course. Your assignment should include the following: 12-point font, 1-inch margins, and double-spacing. Title & Title Page (3-marks) Prepare a Title for your research project that has a clearly defined who, what, where, and when. (2-marks) Prepare a Title Page that includes your full academic information and the Title of your research project; refer to your textbook for sample formatting of a Title Page. (1-marks) Topic Overview (one-page) (14-marks) A) Statement of Purpose (10-marks) In *one-page*, describe the Research Topic you intend to study. Be sure to include the following: ▪ What is the problem/challenge/opportunity you are proposing to study? Why is it necessary for you to do this research? Ensure you use neutral wording. ▪ Whose opinion/experience/ideas will be determined (primary data)? ▪ Where will the proposed study be conducted (organization, geographic location, scope, sampling size)? ▪ When will the proposed study be conducted? Give enough information so the reader can understand your Topic/Research and your intended focus. Provide a clear rationale for the Research that explains the significance of the Topic. B) Proposed Methodology (4-marks) While the Topic is yours to decide, it must require the collection of both secondary and primary data. Propose the method (in the same “one-page” above) that you recommend be used to collect the primary research, either interviews or surveys, as appropriate. Please remember that at no point in this course will you collect primary data. That is, you never do research in B2011, rather you are merely *proposing* research. Your Topic should be something that interests you. A subject you are passionate about, and/or a subject you would like to research and learn more about. Your Topic needs to address a question or attempt to answer a problem. You are proposing to do Research to solve and find an answer or solution. Reference List (3-marks) Identify at least three scholarly publications (journal articles/respected professional publications) that relate to your proposed research. State these three in your Reference List. If you are unsure of what sources are appropriate, ask MUN Library staff. Cite the three sources, and *any other sources you used*, in your Reference List in APA format.
