Part 1
Workplace Stress”
Mira Smith is the human resources director for a manufacturer of airline parts in Montreal. The environment of the company is one of high stress, and Smith realized that she needed to take the steps to ensure that the stress would not affect the physical and psychological health of her firm’s employees.
Based on what you have read in Chapter 15:
Discuss what the outcome of high levels of stress can be on both the individual and the organization.
If you were Smith, what kind of plan would you set up to help prevent the effects of stress?
Part 2 responses to two different classmates
peer 1 High level of stress can have negative consequences on both the employee and the organization. Stress is never a good thing for anybody, especially being stressed at work, it definitely lowers your performance at work, and it makes the job a lot harder than it actually is. Stress can lead to not wanting to come into work, and it will be hard to see the benefit of working and it will be a lot harder to do the job. The actual company will be hurting in so many ways, not only will the performance not be the same, but the quality of the work also will not be the same. Motivation is the key, once the stress is there, motivation will be gone. Overall high stress level can cause a lot of damage. According to our textbook “bad or negative stress, known as distress, happens when there is too much stress and when nothing is done to eliminate, reduce, or counteract its effects” (Aamodt, 2022).If I was in Mira Smith position, anything that I find stressful I would take the step to remove it or make it better. I would also make sure all my employees are on the same page, I would assure them, to not let anything stress them out if it is to let me know. I will also encourage my teams to take extra breaks if they really need to. I would also make sure I keep an eye on everything that needs to be done and see where the stress is coming from. According to our textbook there is a couple ways to managing your stress “exercising not only keeps your heart strong and resistant to the effect of stress but can also help reduce stress levels during particular stressful moments” (Aamodt, 2022).Word count: 321Reference:
peers 2 Workplace StressWe can say that our senses go hand in hand with our emotions. Many things can affect our hearing, seeing, touch, smell, and even taste. Our five senses can add to our physical and psychological levels of stress. Our text states that stress is “the physiological and the physical reaction to certain life events or situations (Aamodt, 2022).” Prolonged events such as stressors like noise, which, of course, is our hearing sense, can cause a strain on our mental as well as physical health. We have learned that not all stress is distress, which is the negative stress aspect. There is also eustress, which is positive energy with a good outcome that motivates good results for giving the best performance (Aamodt, 2022).
In my life, I have become aware of the personal stresses that cause me fear, resistance, and resentment, which, according to previous discussions, has me avoiding conflict. The fear of the unknown makes us uncomfortable; resistance is trying to hold on to what we are used to, and resentment must endure what is different (Aamodt, 2022). A work environment can stress our lives, affecting our job and organizational characteristics. The different roles that our job characteristics can have on stress are conflict, ambiguity, and overload (Aamodt, 2022). When you have that feeling that you are doing someone else’s job instead of yours is role conflict; doing a job you are not sure you know what you are doing is role ambiguity, and we do not have the skills, the help or the time to do the job is role overload (Aamodt, 2022). Organizational characteristics stress that your skills do not fit the job, the company is making changes, the people you work with, and the company’s laws or politics.
In my work environment, I have to deal with all types of noise, traffic, passengers, and outdoor elements. I work for a 24-hour running company; our schedules can vary, although we can pick a schedule by seniority. The schedule I choose has me up in the wee hours of the morning for work. It is not fun waking up to an alarm clock every morning, but to balance my work and life, I must do this for now. In the case of our human resource director, Mira Smith recognizes the stress of the work environment. In most cases, an organization is only as good as its employees, so if stress plays a factor, practices should be implemented to help alleviate some of the stress. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides some tips for ways employers can help employees deal with stress such as being aware, identifying factors that make it difficult to do their tasks, showing empathy, and providing access (Guidance and Tips., n.d.). Like my job, providing good benefits essential to helping employees, such as healthcare, paid time off, vacation, and sick days with stress. We also have a mental health program to help employees with personal and work-related issues. The best way to assist people is to talk to the employees and find out their opinion of their workload and what they believe is reasonable. The employer should be able to set reasonable goals with minimal stress.
