Quality is of upmost importance in business operations; after all, price and quality are the two fundamental considerations in any decision about whether to purchase a product or service (Stevenson, 2021). Consequently, quality is integral to successful operations management and ought to be incorporated in every aspect of an organization (Stevenson, 2021). Quality can be defined as “the ability of a product or service to consistently meet or exceed customer requirements or expectations” (Stevenson, 2021, p. 379). One recent example of an organization implementing a new quality initiative is Vitaquest International which implemented “a comprehensive quality initiative aimed at fulfilling its goal to be an industry leader in overall quality for the development and manufacture of consumer products in nutraceutical and functional foods markets” (McDonald, 2019, para. 1).
The quality initiative at Vitaquest, referred to as the TotalQ commitment, aims to make quality the focal point of all aspects of the business by building upon the company’s current commitment to quality and setting a roadmap for continuous improvement in the future (McDonald, 2019). Vitaquest’s TotalQ commitment connects to numerous business activities, from sourcing raw materials and testing ingredient integrity, to designing products, assuring internal quality, and testing finished products (McDonald, 2019). Resultingly, the company performs extensive raw material, in-process, and final product testing in its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities with one of the largest and most experienced quality management teams in the country (McDonald, 2019). In fact, Vitaquest performs over 50,000 chemical, physical, or microbiological tests in its labs each year and even develops new testing methodologies (McDonald, 2019). Vitaquest also utilizes rigorous qualification requirements for suppliers and incorporates quality systems in all operations (McDonald, 2019). Vitaquest meets the requirements of current good manufacturing practices (GMPs) set by the FDA, and boasts an excellent inspection record (McDonald, 2019). Still, Vitaquest aims to always improve its commitment to ensuring quality and safety, and to be an industry leader in this regard, developing new, standards-based quality systems (McDonald, 2019).
Firms have a strong strategic incentive to attain and maintain high quality, as this promotes productivity and reflects a positive brand image to customers and potential customers (Stevenson, 2021). Because of the importance of quality, it is no surprise that organizations all over the world have been implementing quality initiatives in order to better compete in increasingly competitive markets (Upadhyaya & Subrahmanya, 2021). While quality may not always be recognized when it is present, it will always be noticed when it is lacking; ultimately, quality is essential for a business to succeed (Palmer, 2021). Thus, quality control is also key as it enables companies to monitor and assess processes to ensure that they are meeting quality standards (Stevenson, 2021). A company that values and prioritizes quality will not only follow rules and guidelines such as ISO standards and good manufacturing practices (GMPs), but will make quality a critical focus of everything they do, including manufacturing products, addressing problems, and engaging with customers (Palmer, 2021).

Quality is extremely important to think about in order to meet customer expectations. “Quality is the degree to which performance of a product or service meets or exceeds customer expectations” (Stevenson). A real-life example of a company taking a new quality initiative in order to meet customer expectations is Toyota Motor Corp. “Toyota Motor Corp. engages in the manufacture and sale of motor vehicles and parts” (Forbes.com). Recently, Toyota has taken initiatives to expand their SMART process, begin the production of vehicles with smart stop technology and engaged event data recorders, ramping up North American Center for quality excellence, and more.
To begin, Toyota is using their SMART evaluation process which will allow investigation to customer concerns as they arise, an example being concerns about acceleration. This evaluation process will allow the company to further understand customer concerns. Toyota is also taking the quality initiative when it comes to smart stop technology and enhanced data recorders. The Smart Stop Technology is a “brake override system that provides customers with an additional level of confidence by automatically reducing engine power when a vehicle’s brake and accelerator pedals are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions” (reliableplant.com). In addition, Toyota is improving its North American Center for Quality Excellence in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will allow team members to receive proper training in order to provide amazing quality and service to customers.
In conclusion, because Toyota is implementing these quality initiatives, their customers will be even more satisfied with their products and will be further motivated to purchase from them.
