39145WEEK 10 DISCUSSION BOARD: PRESENTATION STORYBOARD
In Week 3, you submitted an assignment which detailed how to do a task in a short number of steps.
For your Discussion Board this week, you will create a similar list of steps with accompanying images (or descriptions of images) for a new task: a “How-To” for completing a past assignment from this course!
For your initial post this week, you’ll be making a chart (or “storyboard”) similar to the one below that details the steps of your task on the right, and includes images (or descriptions of your images) on the left to accompany each step.
The task you choose for your “How-To” guide can be an entire assignment, or merely a portion of one (such as how to format APA-style citations, or methods to make sure you get your Discussion Board posts in on time).
Try to choose a task that can be completed effectively in 5-10 steps, as longer instructions might get overwhelming. Your initial post is important, as you’ll be using it to make a presentation for this week’s Writing Assignment.
In your responses, assist your peers with their presentations. Are the steps clear? Do the visuals help or hinder the message?
Here’s an example of how the post should look:

Hello everyone, my name is Sarah Evans. I have worked in the field of pediatric extended home health care for last two years, and I have seen my fair share of trials and tribulations. During this presentation, we are going to discuss communication; how it can help you succeed, and how it can be harmful to your career.
Examples of different communication types – verbal, nonverbal, email, text, etc.
Communication is the act of conveying an idea or intended meaning to another person or group through the use of mutually understood signs, language, or tools.
People interacting in different settings.
Communication is everything, regardless of the environment. Whether you are in the workplace, in a relationship, with friends, or in the general public, you need to be aware of the impression you are giving off.

First impressions have a way of either encouraging or hindering communication. There’s a lot that goes into a first impression; clothes, hygiene, hair, body language, positivity, attention given, and finally the conversation itself. Studies have proven that a person’s body language has four times more influence on a first impression than anything that is actually said. After the first impression has been made, it really sets the tone for the relationship you are going to have with a person.
Good communication skills, and poor – maybe people laughing and people arguing.
People are going to base their opinion of you on your first encounter. There are so many questions answered in those first few critical seconds based on what they see, and how you make them feel. Positive first impressions lead to social cohesion, while negative first impressions lead to biases and social prejudice.
Running an obstacle course
Growth in communication skills will help you to overcome obstacles in both your personal life, and in your career. The goal is to be able to communicate therapeutically.
Emoticons, different expressions
Therapeutic communication is a manner of interacting that focuses on the emotional and physical health of the person you are speaking with. This is generally thought of in terms of healthcare, but it can actually be used by everyone, and could prevent many conflicts.

Interacting with a person who is disabled.
When working in healthcare of any kind, whether it be in the hospital, in a clinical setting, or in a patient’s home, being able to speak therapeutically is key. When speaking to the family of a child with disabilities, you need to be able to speak from the heart. Families want to know that you have their child’s best interest in mind, and that you are going to be their advocate.
Therapy – patient and a therapist?
In order to really assure the parents that you are going to take care of their child like your own, you need to be open with them, and allow them to be open with you as well. Showing compassion toward clients encourages genuine concern and interest in the well-being of others. It also teaches clients how to interact with their peers in a constructive manner.

Self-awareness – looking in a mirror?
Using therapeutic communication is going to help you build your career by teaching you more about yourself. By teaching and providing patients with the tools they need to acknowledge the challenges they’re facing, and improve life situations, you empower the client to become more cognizant of their own behavior and self-correct it. This will also be the case for yourself.
