Project Overview:Academic and professional training modules can help strengthen your resume bydemonstrating that you are a curious, lifelong learner. This assignment is designed tointroduce you to training modules developed through CONVERGE unit at the NaturalHazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder. The goal of completing amodule is to strengthen your knowledge and skills while encouraging you to learnmore about the social scientific study of disasters.There are two assignments:Complete one training module of your choosing from the CONVERGE website andsubmit the certificate of completion on our Blackboard course site.Write a two-page reflection piece that explains how the training module relatesto this class and your future career and/or academic interests and aspirations.Assignment One Checklist:•Visit the training module site(https://converge.colorado.edu/resources/training-modules) and click “registerhere” to create an account. You must create an account and login before you canaccess the modules.Choose either the “Social Vulnerability and Disasters,” the “Disaster MentalHealth,” or the “Cultural Competence in Hazards and Disaster Research” trainingmodule to complete. These are the three training modules currently available.Please choose the module that best complements your interests.Complete the module. To complete the training module, you need to progressthrough all the topics—including the knowledge checks—until you arrive at thefinal quiz. This will take approximately 60 minutes, so please plan accordingly. Youmay begin the module at one point in time and complete it at another point intime by logging back into the account you created. (You can also come back andcomplete the other training modules if you so choose. They are good on aresume/vita.)Finish the quiz at the end of the training. You need to get 8 of the 10 questionsright to earn the certificate. If you do not achieve this on the first try, you can takethe quiz again. You may take the quiz multiple times, but this will add more timeto completing the assignment. A certificate will be automatically generated onceyou have successfully completed the quiz.Save a PDF version of your certificate.After earning your certificate, please upload it as a PDF to Blackboard so I can seeit. Assignment Two Checklist:• Prepare and submit to Blackboard a 2-page reflection paper linking the training,three class readings, and your professional or academic goals.The paper should be a double-spaced document with 1” margins using Times NewRoman 12 pt. font that includes:Your first and last nameThe title of your reflection paper – points for creativity!A well-developed paper that:Is written in a professional, accessible tone that someone with littleknowledge about you, your interests, or this class can understand. Is conciseand efficient; the best reflections will be focused and use language that isnot “fluffy.” Put another way, this assignment favors writers who get to thepoint, write in active voice, and stay on topic.Links together your personal academic or career interests; how the trainingrelates to your academic major, broader education, and your futurecareer/academic goals; and any three class readings that relate to yourinterests and the training.References – Include the list of references you used in your reflection paper.You may use whatever format you know best. I only ask that you stayconsistent in your format.Please submit your two-page reflection in PDF or Word format by 7:00 p.m. CDTWednesday, April 29th to this course’s Blackboard site. NOTE: It is yourresponsibility to ensure you have uploaded the correct version of this assignmentto Blackboard on time and in a format I can grade.Evaluation:Your final grade for this essay will be based on your ability to follow the guidelines;the clarity, creativity, and connectedness of content in your reflection. Your reflectionshould be concise and focused. Use paragraphs to organize your thoughts. Thisassignment is intentionally short to help you practice efficient communication. Allsummaries longer than two pages will lose five points from their total grade. Thisdoes not include references, which may be on an additional page.
