Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength, which can occur as a result of aging. The exact cause of sarcopenia is not fully known. However, a combination of factors likely contributes to its development. One possible reason for sarcopenia’s occurrence is a decline in anabolic hormone levels, such as testosterone, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor (Carter et al., 2019). These hormones play important roles in muscle growth and repair, and as they decline with age, muscle mass and strength may decrease. Another factor that may contribute to sarcopenia is a decrease in physical activity. As people age, they may become less active and less able to engage in regular exercise. Consequently, this can lead to a decrease in muscle mass and strength. Nutritional deficiencies can also contribute to sarcopenia, as inadequate levels of vitamins and minerals can lead to decreased muscle mass and strength. Inadequate intake of protein and other essential nutrients can also lead to muscle loss. These are some of the reasons why sarcopenia occurs.
Muscle fibers, also known as myofibers, are the basic structural unit of muscle tissue. They are composed of muscle cells that are responsible for contracting and relaxing to move. They are grouped in bundles called fascicles, which are then grouped to form a muscle. They are connected to tendons that attach the muscle to bones, allowing the muscle to pull on the bones and produce movement. Also, they have a rich blood supply that provides them with the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. Muscle fibers can be classified into two types, slow-twitch, and fast-twitch fibers, depending on the type of activity they are used for. Slow-twitch fibers are more endurance-oriented while fast-twitch fibers are used for activities that require quick bursts of energy.
