MINDFUL OBSERVATION AND EMPATHY
CO US HCA-CAREER COMMUNICATIONS READING FIVE MINDFUL OBSERVATION AND EMPATHY When observing people and events, it is best to delay judgment. The way we perceive behaviour/events of others is based on our own cultural programming and background. For this reason, it is best to postpone evaluating the situation. If we focus on description rather than interpretation, we can train ourselves to delay judgment. PRACTISING EMPATHY Empathy requires us to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes. This means to put ourselves in the position of trying to understand someone’s feelings, challenges, and problems. In intercultural situations and environments, we need to keep in mind that others have their own cultural programming and background which are affecting how they act, feel, and respond. MINDFUL OBSERVATION Mindful observation requires observing and listening carefully. It requires also that we ask questions when clarification is needed and actively participate in cross-cultural dialogue. Mindful observation involves a recognition that our style of communication may be quite different from that of others. COMPONENTS OF GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS Good communication skills are always important, but especially so in intercultural contexts. In intercultural situations, three communication skills, as follow, stand out as essential: 1. the ability to observe, 2. the ability to listen and 3. the ability to learn from our observations Listening and observing are active skills. If the meaning of words, gestures or silences are not evident, it is important to ask for explanations to assist understanding and communication. COMMUNICATION IS A DYNAMIC PROCESS Remember that communication is an ongoing process which is dynamic. "Dynamic" by definition, refers to something exciting, interesting, which is full of energy and determination to succeed. (Adapted from Suderman, pgs. 54, 55, 64, 65, 185)
