It’s scary hearing how similar we are right now. We’re both in the army, working in Washington, and studying to obtain a degree in computer sciences. Weird, but comforting knowing that someone is doing the same thing. It lets me know that I’m doing something right. Even if I don’t understand the scene behind the robots that are being , I’m glad we are getting people that are keeping ethics in the back of their mind. If I had to take a guess on how things go, I would assume there’s a crazy engineer in each respective field that wants to create a super computer that’ll run the world and kill all the humans and the only thing stopping them is people like you that want the best for the world. Kind of like a superhero. I hope you find what youre looking for in the class. I’m looking forward to building a professional relationship as we go through the class.

I agree with your post fully. There is many pros and cons of ethical relativism, but more harm than good in this theory. In my opinion, if we lived in a ethical relativism we would introduce more divide than unify culture. Thinking in terms of growth or maturating, as there is no guidance or culture rules to how to act. Looking at Blooms research in this week’s content, it says children are born with a “fair to me” attitude. Whereas when we get older our mindsets changes to a “fair to others”. In a world of ethical relativism, would we all be stuck in an all about me mindset?

Thanks for sharing all of those thoughts on relativism! I think that if we examine ethical relativism, we would also have to distinguish between subjective relativism, and also relativism that is based on cultural differences – those differences are also important! I think that your post helps with this also.

My name is Ron I am an active-duty Marine currently stationed in Abilene, Texas. I’m originally from Virginia but have spent a majority of my adult life in North Carolina. My wife and I were a little hesitant about moving to Texas. However, we have really enjoyed our time here and I was able to extend for another year before moving to possibly my last duty station before retirement. I am married with five children ranging from 13 down to 1 with about a three-year gap between them. The free time I do get I usually spend decompressing with the wife in the evenings watching something on t.v., or going to the gym. I am pursuing a B.A. in business management, and this is my last general education credit needed before I begin working on my major required courses.

What comes to mind when you think about “Equal Opportunity Employer?” Is it simply that everyone that is qualified for the job will get a fair shot at it without prejudices? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary it is “an employer who agrees not to discriminate against any employee or job applicant because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, physical or mental disability, or age.” Many employers even boost about having a diverse workforce. Diversity can be a good thing, but what about multiculturalism? There are some customs such as child marriage that are still prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. (Lawson) Does that mean that America should allow these practices to those cultures that have come to live in here? Child marriage affects girls more than boys and in sub-Saharan Africa 38% of girls marry before they turn 18 and 30% of girls marry in South Asia. (Lawson) According to our text for this week, “the relativist wants us to approach the subject of ethics with humility and not rush to condemning behaviors that are different from ours as immoral. The idea is that if we acknowledge that no one culture’s ethical code is superior to another, then our ability to practice tolerance naturally increases, for all moralities are equal.” I figured that child marriage was illegal in America, however, it is legal in 46 out 50 states with parental consent and judicial approval. (Lawson) So with this in mind, no matter what your background is or culture, the employer would look at you and give you a chance. In my opinion, I feel that whomever is the best qualified should get the job and race, sex, or creed should not come into the decision.
