RE: French business culture in its various aspects
I am submitting this memo in preparation for the company’s worldwide development in France so that we may learn about the differences in culture that must be kept in mind for the most professional and respectful experience.
Discussion
This memo will address French business cultures like language, proper greetings, meeting structure, and etiquette.
Language
The importance placed on respect and formality in business interactions, particularly in communication, is one of French business culture’s most significant traits. French is the official language in France. Unfortunately, France does not recognize English as a secondary language. We must teach our staff some basic French. Simple greetings and questions like Hello; thank you; bye. First impressions are crucial to the French and may significantly affect how our business relationship develops.
Proper greetings
In France, the distinctions between personal and professional connections are less strict. A handshake is the proper greeting. French handshakes are recognized for being quick and light. It’s common practice in the workplace for men and women to kiss each other on the cheeks, but you shouldn’t start until your female coworker does [1]. Depending on your relationship with the person, you may refer to them by their first or last name. When making an introduction, French people occasionally use their last name. Eye contact is crucial, so long as it isn’t too distracting. The distance between people is somewhat near while they speak to one another. French business etiquette encourages touching and patting as well.
Business Meeting
In French business culture, familiarity is essential. Therefore, building relationships with your coworkers is crucial. French corporate culture places a high value on relationships; thus, getting to know your coworkers before talking about business is common [1]. It is excellent to talk about personal lives and family lives. Meetings will most likely last longer than anticipated. It is considered rude to speed through a meeting. Meetings in France are often not scheduled on short notice. Similarly, if you want to invite someone to a meeting, plan it at least two weeks ahead of time [2]. As previously said, learning some basic French phrases is strongly suggested. Try to limit your opinions to issues that you are knowledgeable about. Prepare to answer questions about your nation’s history and politics [1].
It is unnecessary to have your business cards translated because most French CEOs read English. Include your title and degree if you have it translated into French. Small gifts are fine, but not during the initial meeting or with your business card. A t-shirt and shorts are inappropriate for a “casual dress” invitation! Men are often required to wear a jacket and tie [1]. The most challenging aspect for French businesspeople to comprehend is that coats are always worn in the workplace. Jackets are frequently removed upon entering the office and before important meetings. However, in France, this is regarded as a complete lack of professionalism and should be avoided at all costs.
Etiquette
In France, business meetings are for discussion rather than decision-making. When reviewing contracts or proposals, be patient, courteous, and formal. Americans are used to moving quickly, while business in France moves slowly. The French value formality and courtesy, yet in a straightforward manner. They prefer that you keep direct eye contact when communicating and do not look concerned by protocol [3].
The Conclusion
The most crucial thing to remember is that France appreciates the social component of commercial transactions. The challenges of doing business in a new nation may be overwhelming; rules constantly change, and no economic landscape is static [4]. France has all the necessary elements to recruit, grow, and expand any size of business. The government and the larger ecosystem are all working together to provide our company with the best possible circumstances for success. Keep cultural and religious sensitivity in mind. When in doubt, take the advice of your France colleagues.
