As we have learned in our HMBA progression there are different types of leaders in an organization.
As we have learned in our HMBA progression there are different types of leaders in an organization. Value-based leadership builds on shared beliefs of the leader and the team, they share a common set of values. Knowing that all the members involved (leaders and team members) have the same values increases teamwork and participation. It also encourages and increases the likelihood that the employees will follow the leader to achieve those goals. However, it needs to be said that there is a big difference between leadership and management. Management is the control where leadership is the guidance.
“Leaders create the vision, Managers execute the vision. Leaders create changed, Managers react to change. Leaders are people focused, Managers are structure focused. Leaders seek feedback, Managers minimize weakness. Leaders lead people, Managers manage work”1
Being a value based leader is important in healthcare. With healthcare we should all be of the belief that what we are doing is to help people in need. This is why I think it is important that leadership in healthcare comes from those that have been healthcare providers at some level. They understand the primary basis of helping and doing no harm. They wish to inspire their team to reach not only their organization’s goal but their personal goal as well. They are typically well spoken and good communicators, all the while gaining respect from their employees and peers. They have an attitude of, no work is beneath them and they are willing to be hands on and help in any situation. They lead by example, they would never ask their employees to do something that they wouldn’t do themselves. I always try to incorporate this into my leadership role. My staff know that I will do anything regardless of how menial. I always provide an ear to listen and ask for their input into how things could be done better. I always say that I may not get the answer that they want, but I will always listen to the complaint or issue and take it seriously.
One of the best examples of a value based leader that I have come across is Scott Brown, he is the President and CEO of Sage Products. Some of his ideas include:
Keep it personal with our people (provide support for personal growth and professional development)
Keep it personal with our customer (develop, produce, and maintain the highest quality products)
Keep it personal with our leadership (demonstrate high visibility and accessibility)
Keep it personal with our community (remain visible and active leaders within our community)2
I think these ideas are very important in being a good leader, especially keeping it personal. Being visible, I always make sure that I touch base with all of my employees, even if that means coming in early or staying late to see those working the off-shifts. They are all important, regardless of the shift that they work and they all have ideas and concerns that are just as important. The other issue that he touches on is keeping it personal with our people. All of us, our employees, and our peers have lives outside of work. It is important that we provide support for them in anyway we can to promote their growth as individuals and not just as employees. Studies have shown that employees that feel supported in life will do better and be more productive in their jobs.
