Values-based leadership can be defined as leading others by staying true to one’s values. It means the leaders remain consistent with their beliefs and never deviate from their fundamental values only their approaches or strategies change depending on situation. Values-based leaders lead by aligning their values with the organization’s values. There are four key qualities of a values-based leader namely self-reflection, balance, self-confidence, and humility.
“Leadership is all about people. It is not about organizations. It is not about plans. It is not about strategies. It is all about people-motivating people to get the job done. You have to be people centered.”- Colin Powell.
Leadership values help you to grow and develop both personally and professionally. Having a strong set of core values as a leader helps build respect and trust among your team. This creates the foundation for you to influence your team in a positive way that encourages high performance and excellence.
A personal example would be our yearly performance evaluations. They are based on five categories: adaptability & resilience, communicating & relationship building, job duties, stewardship & quality assurance, and teamwork & collaboration. One can grasp these as a single individual, but a department must master these as a whole if they want to be successful. I knew and also learned in a previous class, BADM 658 (Communication & PR for Executives), that Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader. Ghandi lead beside his people with peace and influence and was not a dictator. Gandhi inspired his people to tell the truth, live the right way, respect their elders, and wanted freedom for all. Both he and his people worked together towards a common goal and he inspired his people through his courage and determination. I feel if you work “among” your people and not “over” them, you definitely can help your team meet those five categories above. You can show your team they can adapt to any situation; how to communicate effectively & build better relationships, show them that all job duties are for everyone, show them how to be trustworthy, and finally, show them that teamwork definitely makes the dream work.
Leaders should be like Gandhi and be a value based “LEADER” by:
Leading by example-Be positive in every situation, and try to see the best in people, patients, colleagues, etc. Don’t give advice or do something if it’s something you wouldn’t follow or do yourself. Inspire others by being resilient. To help your team get through any change, always maintain a positive attitude, and influence them to do their best.
Encourage people- if you’re trustworthy, well-intentioned, and do the right thing, you can get others to follow you in the right direction.
Authentic & Accountable=honesty. When you are true to yourself, you are true to others. Honesty can help you gain confidence and hold yourself accountable in what you do because it is something you believe in.
Doing what is right- Be trustworthy and transparent in everything you do. Honesty speaks for itself. I feel if you are open and honest with everyone, you will build better relationships along the way.
Empathetic-When confronted with a difficult situation, one should approach the scenario by remaining calm, neutral, and try to do these three things: 1.) place myself in the other persons shoes, 2.) fully listen to their point of view, and 3.) always remember “There are two sides to every story”.
Respects others-I feel you must show respect, to get respect. Respect in relationships builds trust, safety, and wellbeing. Respect also shows how you accept somebody for who they are, even when they’re different from you or you don’t agree with them.
The ultimate goal is for everyone to work together, share the same ideas, and help motivate others along the way. “A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create.” -Mahatma Gandhi
