Please review page 40, “The First Interview”, when addressing #1.
You are a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and you are in the first meeting with the new client. You have spoken with client Kim Brown, over the phone. Kim reported that her mother, Beth, lives with her. Kim’s sister, Susan, lives next door. Kim reported her home has an additional detached apartment in the backyard and this is where the mother was originally going to live. Kim reported her mother stays in Kim’s house “more often than not”, and “doesn’t like to be alone in the apartment”, although she has tried.
The sister, Susan, works full time and stays busy with her children on the weekends. Kim reported that she meets her niece and nephew at the bus stop every day after school and watches the children until her sister gets home from work. Beth, Kim’s mother, at one time would meet the children at the bus stop but she will no longer do this because she will miss “The Price is Right”, her favorite television show. Kim reported this is unfortunate because the help was nice and needed. Susan, the children’s mother, did send the children to after school care for a while but decided the children should go home after school because traffic was always backed up by the time she got off work and was able to pick them up. However, the children enjoyed playing with friends at the after-school care program.
Kim reported that she feels as if she has little to no energy and finds that she “cries a lot more these days” and doesn’t understand why. Kim also reported that she feels as if her heart is going to “jump right out of chest because it’s beating so fast sometimes”! Kim reported that she works 7 – 3 every day and attends graduate school two nights a week. Kim reported that she does a lot of the housework and cooking. Kim reported that she, her mother, and her sister seem to bicker constantly, and everyone wants Kim to quit graduate school in order to be more available. No-one other than Kim wanted to go to therapy because they believed this was a family problem regarding Kim’s selfishness. Sister and mother believe as a family they can work this out but are willing to go to therapy so Kim can see the error of her ways. Kim reported that all are in good general health.
Clients attending first session: Beth, Kim, and Susan.

Number 6: Focus on specific problems and attempted solutions. (.75 points)
Mother’s (Beverly Brown), response to your introduction:
“My daughter is a good daughter and such a good cook! I should know because I am the one that taught her to cook! I worked for over 40 + years and it’s so nice to be retired and taken care of! By the way, I agreed to come today because I know you will agree that my daughter needs to quit graduate school because she is stretched too thin with all that she is doing!”
Sister’s (Susan), response to your introduction:
“Kim is spoiled and is only thinking about herself. She knows I’m a single parent and I need help with my children, but she won’t help with some of their weekend activities. We’re a family and this should be first and foremost. She already has a college degree, and it seems rather greedy that she wants to go to graduate school! Who has time for that?”
