What is a Scholarly Article?
Order Instructions
For this assignment you will review a single, scholarly PRIMARY Research article in the APUS Library and summarize what it says about a specific infant and toddler disorder of your choice (Infantile Autism, Tay-Sachs Disease, Sickle Cell Anemia and Cerebral Palsy are some examples). This 2-3 page paper must be a review of scholarly research, not commercial Psychology Today, Wikipedia or WebMD style publications or self-help or parent support organization material (the latter is very valuable to families in need of easy to digest and access information, but isn’t applicable to this assignment). Article must be recent within the past 5-7 years.

What is a Scholarly Article?
Is It Primary? How Do I Know?
The APUS Librarians are also very helpful and can work with you to find an appropriate article. You can reach them through the Library Portal.
Reading and summarizing a primary research article can be a bit overwhelming. The purpose of this assignment is to expose you to what research looks like as opposed to a general new article or information found on the internet. Research is a very defined and detailed process and is how new information is learned on a topic. The information is then reviewed by other researchers to ensure that the outcome of the research is accurate. Do not worry if you do not understand the entire article. There are some sections, particularly the statistical analysis section, that you may find difficult to follow. This is okay. You will still be able to successfully complete the assignment.
Your paper should be created in a word document and will require an APA formatted cover page. There are many great videos and guides on the internet for creating APA formatted papers. Your paper does NOT need an abstract page. The body of your paper should include the information below. You will also need an APA formatted reference page. Since this paper is a review of a single, scholarly research article, you will have only 1 reference listed on your reference page.
Please use the following outline to successfully complete this assignment. (Note: if you cannot respond to EACH section then you may not have found a scholarly, research article. When in doubt – ask.)
What to include in your paper
Article Summary – A good place to start is with the Abstract of the article. The abstract will give you a good overview of what the article is about. This section should be written entirely in the 3rd person and includes the following:

Main Hypothesis – Why was the study conducted? What was the problem that the author was trying to address? What did the researchers hope to learn?
Methodology – How was the study conducted? Who were the participants in the study?
Findings – Describe the results of the study.
Review of the article – this section can be written in 1st person or using the phrase this writer and should include the following: (note: it should be very clear that this section is YOUR opinion.)
Any potential problems that you may see with how the study was conducted
Three ideas inspired in you by the article
A description of the impact of the research
