What trends and themes did you see across the projects in terms of motivating forces? Did you see much similarity or diversity in sources of motivation? Apple prides itself in being a place where individuals can be part of something bigger that values their employee's efforts and rises to the challenge of making innovations. The company focuses on working together as a team to create an extraordinary user experience. Besides the benefit of working on giant projects, apple also makes it so that their employees can commute to work efficiently. The company offers a company shuttle service that transports employees from parts of the city to the company and provides a stipend to help cover the cost of those commuting by bus, train, or other forms. Some other benefits include an annual 25% discount on apple products, generous parental leave, yearly gym credit, and a good amount of PTO. Spotify is a company that has a worldwide presence and has promoted its ability to offer employers to work remotely to provide more flexibility. By allowing this freedom, they believe it has helped the company find better ways to communicate and collaborate without putting limitations on where someone lives. The company's additional perks and benefits are global parental leave, flexible public holidays, extensive learning opportunities, and employee well-being programs. The theme that I saw while looking into both Apple and Spotify is that they like to highlight being part of a company making big moves in their industry. Both companies use this to recruit potential employees to build a team that can collaborate to meet big goals. I mostly saw similarities among the two companies as they offer similar benefits, like parental leave, learning opportunities, and flexible PTO. The only difference that I noticed was that Spotify is more inclined and welcoming of offering employees remote opportunities. All in all, the companies use these benefits and ways to increase diversity to promote motivation.
How do you think leaders/managers and organizations cope with the diverse motivational needs of employees (provide examples and/or suggestions, but use research and evidence to back those up)? Motivation is the intention for why an individual would behave a certain way which can drive the employer to perform well in the company. I think that a vital part of what a leader or organization should consider when dealing with diverse motivational needs is first to understand what drives your employees. No two employees are alike; therefore, understanding what drives them is essential to learn by either doing a survey or communicating with them to reassure them that they are valued (Gaston, 2016). By allowing this action to undertake, the company would have a better assessment of how to establish benefits that best cater to their employee's needs and, as a result, build a better work environment. After knowing more of who you are working with, rewarding and recognizing them is a great tool to establish. This can be accomplished by giving prizes like gift cards or certificates to employees who exceed expectations (Williams, 2016). Highlighting and showcasing these types of employees not only motivates them but others to also follow in their footsteps.
What, based upon what you have learned, might you try in your role to motivate your teammates/coworkers/subordinates? Upon reading the various articles on what a company should do to motivate its employees, I noticed how vital it is to have good communication with your team members. I feel as this is an action that I would take with me to any my role at work, especially when working on projects together. Acknowledging one's work and efforts is another factor that I think is great to take into any position that I am in. Rewarding those who go the extra mile and communicating with them to reach the goal together will motivate the team overall to be successful in any project.
