THE SITUATION
This is the storyline foundation for your ROB Project.
Recall a specific problematic situation in your workplace.
Try to think of a situation that was ongoing, created problems for people, was not resolved, and has multiple people at various levels of employment involved.
In short, focus on a situation that had more than one “villain” and a somewhat complicated setting.
This will be the basis for your research.
This is your story to investigate and your mystery to solve.
And work situations are never as simple as you think, never the “fault” of just one person or policy, and always more challenging to fix than anyone imagines.
This is why we study Organizational Behavior.
SET A – The Organization
The workplace under study is made up of shared workplaces for employees and separate offices for the executive staff members. The shared workplaces have a set of four workers per station
The company is a medium sized organization that deals with the packaging and distribution of cosmetics.
The organization is located in Dallas, a state that is situated in Texas
The total number of employees in my location is twenty
I am not in the management
I do not supervise anyone
A total of twenty employees report to the manager in my work location.
My managers title is a departmental head
In a typical day, employees work collaboratively as a team to make follow up with clients and establish contact with new ones through calls, and mails.
In an atypical day, workers speak rudely to clients on the phone to clients or fail to effectively respond to some concerns they raise
Set B – You & Your Workplace
My job title is a customer service representative
I receive a salary every month
The incentive payment I receive is an additional bonus depending on the monthly sales volume. The bonus is 1% of the total sales in a month.
What I like about my work is the opportunity to keep clients satisfied by serving them effectively
What I like about my workplace is adequate collaboration between employees to meet the needs of clients
What I like about my coworkers is that they are hardworking and cooperative.
What I dislike about my work is dealing with difficult clients.
What I dislike about my workplace is lack of privacy
What I dislike about my coworkers is their tendency to infiltrate the privacy of others workers through actions such as borrowing items and failing to return.
I prefer to stay in my current job because I am compensated well, than other workers serving in the same position in the industry. The organization also has good leaders who treat workers with consideration.

Section 2 the situational dilemma

THE situational DILEMMA
Every workplace on the planet has good and bad policies, human behavior, and difficult situations that impact the daily life of people in it and the people around it (customers, clients, local community).
In this section you will describe a specific situation that you consider to be an ongoing problem in your immediate work environment. This situation is ongoing and specific.
This is a problem that disrupts daily work, negatively impacts individual performance, hurts the development of a positive work culture, etc.
Use the fundamentals of situation description using a Who, What, Where, When, and Why approach.
Be as specific as possible (use action verbs to describe behavior, give a picture of the setting so others can “see” it.
Spend the least amount of energy on the Why for now – that is the basis of your ROB Project research inquiry.
Answers to questions-a
WHERE:
The disconcerting issue is exists in a medium enterprise that has a total of 150 employees. It is situated in Dallas, Texas, and serve a broad client base. The company packages, markets and sells cosmetic products.
The issue in question occurs in the customer service department. It is a unit that is made of twenty employees working in shared spaces. They work under the supervision of a departmental head.
WHAT:
The issue is question is poor customer service. Some of the workers speak to the clients inappropriately. They also do not address their concerns or post their orders promptly. The trend has caused dissatisfaction in the clients.
According to the company policy, the employees should prioritize the needs of clients and ensure they are served appropriately. The employees training and company manual also requires that clients be treated with etiquette. The lay down procedures of the profession have specific guidelines that obligate the professionals to serve clients effectively.
The workers are not adequately trained to perform their designated roles. Also, the leadership of the organization does not adequately monitor the workers to ensure that they perform their roles effectively. The protocols used in the organization do not have modalities that promote effective customer service.
ANSWER s to Questions -B
WHO:
The main actors in this situation are the employees. The leader in charge of the department is also main actor in the issue. Additionally the manager of the human resource department is also a main actor in the issue.
There are two customer service employees whose services to the clients is inadequate. They have an experience of one year and six months respectively. On the other hand the leaders each has an experience of two years.
Describe your own involvement in this situation. What responsibility do you have? What have you been doing so far? I share a working space with the two employees in question. I feel obliged to take the steps needed to improve the way they handle clients because their inadequacies taints the image of the entire team. I have correct them whenever I can and encourage them to use better skills.
WHEN:
The situation has been occurring frequently for the past three months. Every week an incident occurs between the workers and customers that to me reflects poorly on the quality of the company’s services. Sometimes, the problematic issue arises every day.
WHY:
It is the responsibility of all individuals in the department to work collaboratively to ensure that the organization functions effectively. It entails all employees and leaders working together collaboratively to eliminate the negative traits. The management should also be involved in the process to ensure that adequate structures are instigated to rectify the issue
Currently, no step has been taken to rectify the issue.

Section 3 Theory and research
Due NOV 14

tHEORY APPLICATION AND RESEARCH
In this Section you will focus on one Body of OB Theory to use as a lens into this situation.
Each Chapter in the Book focuses on a Body of OB Theory (Motivation, Leadership, etc).
You must now choose one Body of OB Theory (think Chapter topic) and then you must refine that choice by researching sub-theories related to it. There are hundreds of sub-theories within a Body of Theory.
You are now beginning the Research phase and you are looking for articles, reports, news items, and academic papers to find a reasonable explanation for the WHY behind your situation at work.
There are always MANY explanations! Your task is to find one that logically and reasonably explains the reason for the situation, the reason for inaction, the reason for wrong action, the reason for the situation not to be resolved.
ANSWERs to Questions
The body of OB theory that I will use to investigate this situation is leadership. The specific area that has been neglected is performance appraisal. Performance appraisal is the progressive assessment of employees to ensure that they are using effective protocols while performing their designated tasks. The process entails those in leadership position continuously evaluating the performance of workers to ensure it is optimal.
The theory applies to the story because the inadequate trend has been going on in the department every week for the past three months. However, the leadership of organization has not noticed or taken any action. Therefore, it shows that the process of employee appraisal is not implemented effectively in the organization.

APPLICATION of THEory and Resolution of dilemma
Now it is time to take all your research and refined understanding of the psychological, emotional, and cognitive impacts on workplace behavior and decision-making and apply it to your situation (the dilemma).
Do not editorialize or otherwise use any other source for your analysis other than the research you located. There should be no “new” theories, etc. here.
Answer the following questions then provide at least 3 options for resolution of your situational dilemma.
In this section you are not offering specifics, you are applying the research to hypothesize what might be the cause of the situation and what might be possible resolutions to the situation.
You will get more specific in the next and final section.
Answers to questions
The area that explains what is occurring in the workstation is that the leaders in the organization have not appraising the employees’ performance. As a result, they are aware of the inadequacies therein. For example, the some workers are not performing their roles effectively, but no step has been taken to change the situation.
The additional area of the research that explains the why is that the employees are not adequately trained to perform their roles. For example, they do not have the knowledge needed to handle difficult clients. This aspects limits their ability to perform their roles effectively.
The why behind the management behaviors is that the leaders are using an inappropriate leadership. The current model that does not prioritize the need to assess the performance of clients time and again. As a result, poor performances in the organization are not identified and corrected.
The why behind the employees behaviors is that they are not competent enough to handle their designated roles. They need coaching on how to handle the responsibility more effectively. This calls for improvement of the implemented leadership strategies.
This dilemma is ongoing and has not been resolved because the management has not realized the need to appraise the employees. They have not made necessary changes needed to identify their weakness and improve their performance. Therefore, the productivity of the organization is affected significantly.
