The Power of an Illusion, there is no biological basis for the idea of race, yet the concept has had
considerable social, economic, and political effects. This week you’ll be examining how the concept of
race was developed over time, and the impacts this idea has had on people of color in the United States.
In a minimum of 3 single-spaced pages, please respond to the following questions:
1. First, define the concept of race (distinguishing race from ethnicity) and describe and demonstrate
why scientists argue that biological understandings of race are empirically inaccurate.
2. Second, explain when and why was race constructed as a concept. In your analysis, be sure to
describe the historical processes that influenced the development of racial ideology, paying specific
attention to impacts of colonialism, slavery, and immigration laws and practices.
3. Third, explain the concept of institutionalized inequalities and illustrate how such inequalities are
embedded in the economy, housing policies and practices, our health care system, and our criminal
justice system.
In your analysis, be sure to engage with, provide specific examples from, and cite** all of the
assigned materials from this week (this includes lectures, readings, videos, podcasts, etc.) to
