Professional identity in nursing is “a sense of oneself, and in relation to others, that is influenced by characteristics, norms, and values of the nursing discipline, resulting in an individual thinking, acting, and feeling like a nurse.” – Definition of Professional Identity in Nursing adopted by the International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing, September 2019 © 2022 University of Kansas/ISPIN The concept of professionalism is grounded in virtue ethics (emphasizing character, etc.) and integrates both social and character development into a professional identity that is dynamic, situated, and lifelong. Your professional identity will grow as you continually evaluate personal and collegial perspectives about what truly constitutes professional practice. In addition, personal needs and characteristics are contributing factors for the role development of RNs returning to school. In this paper, you will analyze who you are as a nurse and how your professional practice reflects your unique professional identity. You will have the opportunity to describe your own philosophy, identify a nursing theory to which you personally relate to, and explore and present a professional role that is of interest to you.
