Summary
Understanding surveillance and knowing how to use its data are two critical steps in establishing the foundation of educational and preventative campaigns. These are valuable skills that employers are looking for in healthcare professionals. Developing surveillance skill sets and methodologies can give a competitive and professional edge to individuals working in the healthcare industry in positions ranging from epidemiologists who do the surveillance, collecting, interpreting, and reporting of the data to health educators who use the data to promote health education plans or prevention campaigns. Apply the following CDC Steps of Outbreak Investigation in stages to investigate an outbreak, disease, or contamination in a particular region. Then analyze existing data sets and report findings to relevant stakeholders.

- Prepare for fieldwork (CDC Steps 1)
- From the following list of outbreaks, choose one to investigate

- Provide the following information:
- Description of fieldwork preparation that addresses scientific and investigative issues
- Description of fieldwork preparation that addresses management and operational issues
- Identification and confirmation of outbreak incident, with a description of target disease and/or health condition
- Establish the existence of an outbreak (CDC Steps 2)
- Provide the following information:
- Verification and summary of the diagnosis
- Construction of a working case definition that describes the development or establishment of criteria to measure the significance of the target disease or health condition
- Systematic identification of cases and recorded information
- Verify the diagnosis (CDC Steps 3)
- Provide the following information:
- Research findings and results
- Collection of information from one or more infected persons with the disease
- What were the infected persons exposures before becoming ill?
- What do the infected persons think caused their illness?
- Do the infected persons know anyone else with the disease?
- Do the infected persons have anything in common with other infected persons who has the disease?
- Summary of the research findings using frequency distributions
- Construct a working case definition (CDC Steps 4)
- Provide the following information:
- Disease investigation criteria
- Restrictions by time, place, and person
- Do not include the exposure or risk factor you are interested in evaluating
- Appropriate analysis to determine risk factors
- Different categories of a case definitionsuch as confirmed, probable, and possible/ suspect which allow for uncertainty
- Find cases systematically and record information (CDC Steps 5)
- Provide the following information:
- Identification of additional cases to pinpoint the true geographic extent of the problem and the populations affected
