how to do a factcheck.
There’s only so much we can do in a 4-week class so I wanted to give you some resources to take with you as the class ends so you can continue to learn about Nevada and the world.
Here is a good source for Nevada history. It is called: . It is kind of like Wikipedia but dedicated exclusively to Nevada history.
And speaking of Wikipedia, lets be honest, we all use it. Even the teachers that tell you not to use it, use it. We use Wikipedia because it is convenient, useful &, wait for it, pretty reliable. Since we already use it, lets learn how to use more effectively. I recommend having a Wikipedia page open while you .
Here is a that will teach you how to do a factcheck.
Here are some great factchecking sites. , (Links to an external site.), (Links to an external site.), (Links to an external site.) or . (Links to an external site.)
Some good news sources are: , and The . I think the Associated Press (AP) is the best news source in the world. I recommend you download the app (it’s free).
If you prefer to watch your news as opposed to read it the best source by far is the PBS NewsHour. Cable news channels are often biased and factually dubious and there are a lot of dicey YouTube ‘news’ channels that are also biased and factually dubious. You can find the PBS NewsHour on your local channel 10 or .
Here are three sites that will help you determine the reliability of a source: , & .
Here are the best sources for local news: (AKA The RJ), (AKA The Sun), (The Indy), (deals more with the business and gaming side of Vegas news) & (deal with pop culture stuff-music, movies, food, etc.)
Good local TV news sources are: , , or
National Public Radio (NPR) has a daily pod dedicated to Nevada called State of Nevada. .
Here is some information that details the importance of local news:
- Local journalism is disappearing across America creating “News Deserts.” These news deserts are areas stranded without local coverage leaving residents with only national journalism or social media
- A Pew study showed that 21 U.S. states dont send local journalists to Washington DC. Thats 42 U.S. senators and a ton of representatives that dont get a question from a hometown reporter. That’s 21 states that dont get any news from hometown reporters about how what happens in DC affects their community.
- In our terribly divided nation, we need the local newspaper (or websites) to give us common information an agreed-upon set of facts upon which to base our opinions. Local news is less partisan. When all we have is national news, we tend to be much more tribal and partisan. Much of tribalism goes away on the local level.
When local journalism goes away and there is less local reporting:
- People call their elected representatives less
- People are less likely to attend city council, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) & other community meetings.
- Voter turnout goes down
- Local corruption goes up
- Schools get worse
- Government costs go up because of lack of scrutiny over local deals
- Cities and municipalities pay higher interest rates on bonds and long-term borrowing
- And that is just what we know. One problem with losing local coverage is that we never know what we dont know.
Don’t get me wrong, following national and international news is important but there is a pretty good argument that local news is more important or at the very least more useful to our lives. Stories about the Golden Knights or CSN Coyotes, freeway or road closures, restaurant or shops opening or closings, the weather, etc. Local stories give us Southern Nevadans a shared experience, a shared set of facts and a shared language that brings us together while national stories often drive us apart.
I highly encourage you to subscribe to a local media outlet-The Las Vegas Sun, The Las Vegas Review Journal and/or The Nevada Independent- once you’re financially stable.
In 250-500 words consider the following:
- What struck you about the information about local news?
- Considering all the information on this page, what did you find most interesting, useful and/or surprising?
