Jesus addresses the uncertainty of the disciples and commissions them to go make disciples in the authority and name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Promotion of Book’s Purpose: This final account of interaction between Jesus and his disciples promotes the supreme authority that Christ’s kingship entailed. His identity is established by the given authority that he has attests to. The same authority that Jesus taught with, healed with, and was raised with continues to be complete. Only the true Son of God could wield such power and exercise the autonomy to have his disciples make more disciples in his name. Climactically, Matthew informs his readers that Jesus, risen from the dead, has testified of himself and provided evidence of his own authority so that we might know who He is. Thus, Matthew fulfills his purpose. Place in Salvation History: I. The Promise Fulfilled: The seed of Abraham, the Lord Jesus Christ Place in Biblical Thought (with reasons):The teaching of Matthew 28:16-20 is developmental. Through out other text Jesus is recorded as having sent out the disciples to preach the kingdom and to meet the needs of those they were sent to (Luke 10:1-9; Mtt 10:1). This is the same authority that Jesus exercises in this teaching but with much less of the mystery surrounding his miraculous resurrection. People today should be able to relate to the idea that the mission of Christ disciples is to make disciples. With the ability of the world today to communicate and overcome geographic, demographic, and social issues, disciples should thrive. People should be able to relate to the idea of authority as a manifestation of personal autonomy while recognizing that Christ’s authority bore evidence. People should also be able to relate to the idea of keeping in both tradition and practice of teachings that have been handed down. Correction: The bad news for people today is that all roads do not lead to the same destination. Contemporarily, people attempt to reconcile the differences of teaching and spirituality with the thought that the result for all people will be the same. The instructions of Christ were for the disciples to teach the nations to keep His teachings. Many people like the disciples in the text attempt to doubt and worship Christ simultaneously. This seriously disables them leaving them powerless to fulfill the instructions Christ gave. Capture the Significance: The good news for people today is that there is an answer for their double mindedness. Jesus told the disciples that all authority was given to him. When the people of God trust in Jesus they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to accomplish the things that he has instructed them to do. The presence of God is always with us just as Jesus said. As a result of studying this text, I am aware of changes that need to be made in my life. I must learn to lean on and trust in the authority that Christ has given his disciples. I am challenged to go therefore. “Going therefore” is the conclusion of both my doubt and my worship. No matter what state I am in the response is to trust and obey.There is praise to be offered unto God for giving Jesus all authority. There is praise to offer to Jesus for giving his disciples authority to execute what he has commissioned us to do. There is praise to be offered to Matthew as the author of the text for solidifying my perception of Jesus as the true king and Son of God who triumphantly brings his kingdom to fruition. Now, I realize that in the moment of the great commission Jesus ensured that his kingdom would have no end. It continues to grow even now as disciples make disciples. This occurs not only because of the ability of the disciples but also in the authority that they do it in. There is no sin to confess or attitude to correct. My attitude has always been to actively engage in this commission. However, actions to take include sharing the text in a new view of the power of the gospel message. I also want to disciple others with this new understanding of the text as a resolution to all the times Jesus sent out the disciples. To disciple in such a way that the limits of my perceptions of “all” be taken off. Lastly my desire is to grow in the grace that the text offers knowing that Christ is with me and his authority expels doubt. 13
