In March 2025, federal employees filed a class action lawsuit against the Trump administration. They claimed they were unfairly fired because of their race, gender, and perceived involvement in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Many of the employees were women or people of color, and some had only attended a DEI training or belonged to a resource group. The lawsuit says these firings violated their First Amendment rights and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (Bunn, Glisson, Alcindor, & Gregorian, 2025).

One concept from Chapter 8 is gendered organizational structures. Mumby and Kuhn (2019) explain that organizations often reflect society’s ideas about gender. In this case, women were seen as less valuable because they worked in roles that supported inclusion. Another concept is power and control over meaning. Leaders decided that DEI work was not important, which shows how those in charge can shape what matters in the workplace (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019). The third concept is resistance and voice. The lawsuit is a way for employees to speak up and challenge unfair treatment (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019).

These ideas help us understand how communication works in organizations. When people in power decide what is important, it affects who gets heard and who gets ignored. If organizations listen to more voices and value different kinds of work, they can become more fair.

I find third-wave feminism the most interesting. It focuses on how gender connects with race and identity. This wave helps explain why the firings were unfair and why inclusion matters.
