The World Trade Organization (WTO) was created to oversee fair trade between countries, to help settle disputes when disagreements occur. The goal is to lower trade barriers and to set standards that allow goods to move across borders as efficiently as possible. This connects directly to the global supply chain, because companies depend on the predictable flow of goods, and rules, to help develop their supply chains. As Christopher (2016) explains, “The elimination of trade barriers and the creation of common standards enable supply chains to become truly global” (p. 209).
In the last five years, the WTO has faced several major challenges. During 2019, the US and China trade conflict led to tariff disputes that required WTO intervention. In 2020, the COVID pandemic disrupted trade flows, and the WTO began tracking restrictions on essential medical supplies. In 2021, the organization became central in vaccine distribution debates and the discussion of intellectual property rights for vaccines. In 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine created food and energy concerns that the WTO monitored closely. In 2023 and 2024, the WTO addressed growing concerns over export bans on raw materials, climate policy debates, and slowing trade growth tied to ongoing supply chain fragility. The issues change, but there’s continually been something to go astray each year.
From these events, it seems that the WTO remains a crucial part of the global system. When disruptions occur, the WTO often becomes the place where disputes are handled, and rules are enforced. Without it, trade would be even more disrupted, and global supply chains would collapse when disagreements arise, and with the political pressure of everything. For me, the lesson is that visibility and trust are the most important factors in sustaining a pipeline that crosses borders.
