In my daily life, I am part of the United States Air Force, where I currently serve as an instructor supervisor. From a systems perspective, the Air Force functions as a large, dynamic system made up of interconnected subsystems. At the local level, my detachment in Delaware is a subsystem within the broader Air Force, and within that detachment, my section of instructors operates as its own subsystem. Each level functions independently, but also relies on coordination with higher levels to sustain mission success.
Within the structural hierarchy, I directly supervise a section of instructors. My immediate supervisor is our unit’s Senior Enlisted Leader, who overseas the entire detachment. Above that, our leadership falls under a wing located in Texas, meaning our unit does not directly belong to the base where we are physically stationed in Delaware. This creates a layered system in which information and decisions flow vertically across multiple levels of command.
Communication within our organization is managed in several ways, including emails, scheduled briefings, and peer-to-peer discussions. At the local detachment level, communication runs relatively efficiently; our leadership and instructors are able to address issues quickly through emails, chatting in the office, or saving it for the weekly meeting. However, communication with our wing leadership in Texas can sometimes be slow due to distance and differing priorities, which occasionally delays decision-making. This demonstrates how information flow within a system can vary depending on the subsystems involved.
Overall, I am comfortable with the current communication structure of my unit. Within our Delaware detachment, communication is effective and supports both mission readiness and instructor cohesion. While communication from our wing in Texas could be streamlined for greater speed and efficiency, I believe the system we operate in as a whole is both functional and supportive.
