Impact of AI in our society

“GenAI has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible and is poised to revolutionize business models, the workplace and society” (The Impact of GenAI on Work and Society – a Financial Times Live Event, n.d.). This technology, with its capacity to enhance multiple facets of society, has already made a significant positive impact. It has resolved intricate issues, optimized industrial efficiency, and personalized experiences. However, we must also acknowledge the potential issues it may bring in the future. These include data privacy and security, bias in decision-making processes, and the possibility of job displacement, which we need to address proactively.

AI and Future Jobs

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the labor market, introducing new job categories while automating repetitive tasks. With a projected 20-50 million new jobs by 2030, AI is generating and enhancing roles in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors” (Adecco Institute, 2024). However, this increase in job opportunities is also leading to employment displacement in industries such as retail, manufacturing, and logistics. The focus is on ensuring a fair transition through initiatives that promote skill enhancement and job recycling, thereby addressing the challenges of AI-driven job displacement.

Likelihood of the technological Singularity

Technological singularity continues to be a subject of contention. It is indeed a plausible eventuality, given the technological advances accomplished thus far. Although it is accurate that most of these accomplishments have been generated by human intellect, certain experts, including Ray Kurzweil, contend that this may occur soon; conversely, others assert that existing computational limitations and the comprehension of consciousness render such an occurrence improbable. The likelihood of the singularity may hinge on advancements in disciplines such as quantum computing and neurology. However, it is essential to assess the potential dangers of AI automation and stress the need to devise strategies to prevent it from eluding human oversight.
