Background and Research Questions
PART 1: BACKGROUND
To Prepare
The background to your study is significant because it is only by researching and reviewing the published literature related to your topic that a gap in the literature is determined. Please carefully review and complete ALL parts of this assignment.
Review your Problem Statement, and identify the main assertions and keywords in your statement. You will begin learning more about what is already known about your problem in current research. When you know what has already been established in current research, it will be easier to focus your research on one main gap in the current research and refine your research questions.
To do this, you will conduct a search of current research, preferably from the last 2–3 years but no older than 5 years. Locate seven (7) current, peer-reviewed research studies on your problem/topic. If you need help identifying keywords for your study, refer to the link in your course resources called “Keyword Searching: Finding Articles on Your Topic.”
Use the “Background Table for Prospectus” to analyze the references. For each study identify the following information:
What is the title of the study?
Who is/are the author(s)?
When was the article published?
Where was the article published? (List journal, doi, or weblink)
What is the methodology of the study?
Who were the participants/sample in the study?
How were the data collected?
What are the main findings of the study?
Why is this study relevant to your study?
On the Background Table, also make a notation of the theoretical or conceptual framework included in the study for use in Module 4.
Develop a numbered, annotated list of seven (7) current peer-reviewed research studies that are relevant to your research problem. To demonstrate the quality of evidence of a study, include the following:
One sentence telling the author, title, date, methodology, sample/participants, data collection (i.e., interviews, achievement test scores, or focus groups), and purpose of the study;
One sentence telling the key findings relevant to your study; and
One sentence telling how this study is relevant to your research study.
Here is an example of what you will do for each of the research studies you review:
In a qualitative case study, Ames (2017) observed and interviewed six junior high school teachers and one administrator from a high technology-use school to determine their perceptions about how their social environment and local culture affected technological integration. Findings indicated that teacher sharing and support about the use of technology to improve learning were the most relevant factors to overcoming barriers to technology integration. This provides insight into possible strategies to overcome cultural and social barriers to technology integration that can provide a basis for interview questions in my study.
Put the annotated list of seven (7) current research studies with a 3-sentence description for each study on the Dissertation Prospectus Template in the Background section. Include the seven (7) research studies on the Reference page on the Dissertation Prospectus Template following proper APA formatting.
PART 2: RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Once you discover what is already known about your topic from current research, you will be able to identify what needs to be known on your topic (research gap). A more extensive review of current research will be conducted when you write Chapter 2 of the proposal for your dissertation. At that point, you may find that the tentative research questions you provide in your prospectus may need to be revised. In this module, you will write one or two research questions you want to explore given the gap you found in current research.
Write one to two (1–2) tentative research questions to explore in your dissertation study.
If you are proposing a quantitative study, your questions will answer whether a significant relationship of some type (positive or negative) exists between two or more variables. You also will include the hypotheses that indicate a significant relationship or a lack of a significant relationship (null hypothesis) that you want to use in your study.
If you are proposing a qualitative study, your questions will be open-ended, asking about when, where, why, with whom, or how related to the topic you are exploring to help you explain something about your topic.
If you are proposing a mixed methods study, you will include a quantitative and a qualitative question, one of which will provide additional information or clarification about the answer you receive for the other question.
Put your research questions on the Dissertation Prospectus Template that has your Title Page, Problem and Purpose Statements, Background, and References.
