Part 2
This week we are learning about holding effective and productive meetings. One of the key elements of an effective meeting is a well-organized and thoughtful agenda. Assume that you have been tasked with holding a 1-hour meeting on a topic of your choosing. Create an agenda for a 1-hour meeting, including the following elements.
Date, start time, end time
Purpose(s)
Desired outcome(s)
At least three agenda items with estimated time for each item
Participant list
If you wish, you may base your meeting agenda on your actual job. Alternatively, your meeting agenda may be fictionalized, based on an organization you wish to work for in the future.
Chapter 7 of our textbook features a sample agenda, as well as an excellent discussion of how to make meetings more effective.
Length Requirement: It should be one page. It is best for the meeting attendees to be able to see all of the agenda items on a single page.
You will be graded based on the rubric below.

Part 3
Assume you are serving as a member of the hiring committee for an executive level position in your organization (it’s up to you to decide on the exact position). After starting with a large group of applicants, the committee has narrowed the search down to three potential candidates:
Jean. Jean clearly has a passion for the work this position involves. This candidate answered all the questions adequately, but was stronger in some areas than others. There were a few occasions when Jean seemed to be caught off guard by a question, but in each case Jean managed to regain composure and make a solid response. Jean is clearly intelligent, and has a good understanding of the organization’s goals and priorities. On the other hand, Jean sometimes gave responses lacking detail and context. Jean has a physical disability that will not limit the candidate’s ability to do the job, and expressed the desire to make the organization more focused on serving people with disabilities.
Taylor. Taylor is a smooth and confident speaker. Taylor was well prepared for the interview and answered every question as though it had been provided ahead of time. Taylor’s answers were more detailed and precise than those of Jean, but Taylor showed less enthusiasm at times. Taylor’s responses focused more on the specific duties and responsibilities of the role, and rarely touched on the “big picture” of the organization’s long-term goals. Taylor is a member of a historically underrepresented racial minority. Your organization has few underrepresented racial minorities at the executive level.
Sam. Sam combines both the strengths and weaknesses of the other two candidates. Sam isn’t quite as confident as Taylor, but speaks more smoothly than Jean. Sam is less passionate for the job than Jean, but is more passionate than Taylor. Sam’s answers manage to be both detail-oriented and express a sense of the organization’s long-term goals. Sam appears to be a traditional candidate.
Now that the interviews have concluded, the leader of the search committee has called a meeting to discuss which candidate to hire. In order to make the discussion more thoughtful, the leader has asked each member of the committee to write a brief message explaining which candidate should be hired and provide reasons for that choice. Your assignment is to write that message in the form of a memo to the members of the search committee.
Requirements:
Write your response in the form of a memo, including the To, From, Subject, and Date. The length should be no longer than one page.
Rank your candidates in order of hiring preference. Provide reasons to support your point of view. Discuss each candidate in a separate paragraph.
Conclude by providing a sense of how strong your hiring preferences are. In other words, do you feel one candidate is much better than the others?

Part 4
One of the most important workplace skills is the ability to persuasively present your ideas to others. This week you will begin working on a persuasive presentation. This assignment spans Weeks 6–8 and includes multiple steps.
In our textbook on page 265, there is a list of over 50 broad topics that you may wish to choose from. In addition, here are a few others you may wish to consider.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
Pros and cons of working from home
Challenges and opportunities in doing business overseas
Adopting green policies and technology at work
The future of work
Improving employee satisfaction
Increasing customer loyalty
If you would like to choose a topic not listed here, please consult with your instructor first.
You will need to complete the following tasks.
Week 6: In the Week 6 Discussion, you will create a short survey to assess the needs and interests of your colleagues. In addition, you will create a formal outline of the presentation. For more details on these tasks, see the Week 6 Discussion and Week 6 Assignments.
Week 7: In the Week 7 Discussion, you will share a sample slide from your presentation and explain why you believe it is effective in communicating your ideas. In addition, you will create a brief annotated bibliography consisting of two high-quality sources. Of those, at least one must come from a library database, such as Ebscohost or ProQuest.
Week 8: You will submit the finished presentation. It will be 6-8 minutes long and consist of approximately 8–10 slides, accompanied by audio. There are a variety of different ways to create a presentation with audio, but the simplest is probably PowerPoint. If you wish to use something different, ask your instructor first. Use the outline from Week 6 to help you to organize your presentation, use the sources from annotated bibliography to help support your ideas, and feedback from the discussions to help focus your presentation and improve the look and feel of your slides. Here is a suggested organizational structure.
Title slide (One slide)
Presentation overview (One slide)
Main points and subpoints (Five to six slides)
Conclusion (One slide)
References (One slide)
Part 5
A great first step when approaching a longer communication task is to create an outline. A well-written outline provides a clear organizational template and structure for a presentation, such as the one you are working on. Ultimately, the presentation you complete in Week 8 will draw upon and follow the outline you create here
Requirements
Purpose statement: A declaration of the goal of your presentation
Thesis statement: A one-sentence summation of the central idea of your presentation
Three main points: Specific ideas related to the presentation topic
At least two subpoints for each main point: Subpoints help to explain main points
Sub-subpoints, as needed: Sub-subpoints help to explain subpoints
Length requirement: One page, submitted as a Word file.

Part 6
an effective presentation must have solid support in the form of research. Toward that end, this week you will annotate two high-quality sources in support of your presentation topic. At least one of these sources must come from a library database, such as Ebscohost or ProQuest.
The annotations should be listed in alphabetical order (by lead author’s last name or first word of the title if no author) and include the following elements.
The reference in APA format
A summary of the article written in your own words
(Warning: Do not copy the abstract.)
One quotation from the article, incorporated into a sentence, written in APA style, including author, date, and page number
An overall assessment of the article and how you feel it will fit into your presentation
A sample annotation is shown below.
Reference: Austermuehle, E. (2018). Monitoring employees through GPS technology: What is legal and what are best practices? Employee Relations Law Journal, 44(1), 10-14.
Summary: Austermuehle’s article shows that there are a number of benefits to employee monitoring, as well as some risks that need to be accounted for. Among the benefits are making sure that employees are adhering to laws and company policies, improving employee productivity, and increasing employee safety. On the other hand, risks include invading employee privacy, which may result in litigation or lower employee morale. Austermuehle believes that employee monitoring can be beneficial, but argues that it must comply with the law, be used only for legitimate reasons, and not be used outside of work hours. In addition, a clear written policy on monitoring should be provided to employees.
Quotation: Austermuehle (2018) states that “employers should monitor employees only to the extent that it is justified by a business need” (p. 13).
Overall Assessment: Austermuehle’s article is well written, well researched, and presents a balanced approach to a controversial topic. It will prove useful in my presentation on employee monitoring.
